8/9/2002: Nissan introducing electronic 4x4 system in Micra
Nissan has equipped a new model of its March (Micra)
subcompact car with a four-wheel-drive system in which an
electric motor powers the rear wheels while the engine turns
the front wheels.
The new system is claimed to be five percent more
fuel-efficient than previous 4x4 systems. At the same time
manufacturing costs are also lower because the system
contains fewer moving parts. The company says it will
install this e-4WD system in other subcompacts.
The system shares some similarities with a hybrid
powertrain, though there is no storage of the power
generated by the engine. As with hybrids, however, there is
no need for a prop shaft because the rear wheels are
connected to the front end of the car via an electrical
connection.
The e-4WD Micra will cost JPY1.5 million, about JPY180,000
more than the conventional front- wheel-drive version of the
car. It can travel 16.6km per litre of petrol (Japanese
mixed cycle tests) compared with 19km for standard machine.
