Not because it's a DC system, but because it is a low voltage system, he is discharging the Optimas at twice the rate you are. > I thought break in was only > supposed to net another 5-10% in performence. Charging should go at least 14.7V per battery, Optimas will actually take up to 16V per battery (without damage) if the current is low enough.
