I for one enjoy hearing about other peoples projects . Somtimes we don't
hear anything till there is some problem which might have been avoided .
What are your plans for the Festiva ( every time I see one I think "that
would make a nice EV" ) motor? number and type of bats? controller? what
distance ,speed do you want?
First draft: '88 or '89 carburated Festiva, (1700 lb.), 6.7" motor, perhaps
a used Curtis, and 96 volts of T105's. Should end up not over 2500 lb, with
1000 lb pack for 40% battery weight. This would be my first EV, I've heard
what happens to that first pack... From what I've read, the Trojans seem to
be a stout battery. I'm a welder, so the fabrication part's no problem, and
I can always trade some favors with our shop machinist for whatever needs
machining.
I've discussed the idea with a few local EVers, John (not that John) was
recommending something along these lines, and (he said nobody would believe
me) John (yes, that John) Wayland suggested the very plan I have described
above.
I also think one of these would make a good EV, they're lightweight,
plentiful, and sturdy enough that our local pizza chain still runs thier
fleet they bought when new.
Feel free to make suggestions, predictions, etc., it's still in the planning
stage. I'm open to ideas. I would like to keep it reasonably inexpensive, so
I won't feel too bad about upgrading anything later.
John

You have to set up an appointment with a "referee" to
verify that yes, this is an all-electric vehicle.
Some offices have never seen one (previous owners of
my rig had this problem), and it will be a real pain.
Good luck,

I wish I knew exactly the problem was so I could be sure I fixed it. I have
probably gone through it thousands of times in my head but can't come to a
conclusion and can't ever know for sure. And it does kind of irk my since it
will most likely be my wife driving it and maybe plugging it in at work.
The previous owner plugged it in and went out to eat. Then he came home and
unplugged it and the damage was done. I only got to see it at least 2+ days
later possible more since I didn't ask when it happened and he might have
take some time between the fire and getting it posted to the list.
When I got there the wooden box was charcoal only in a few inches around
where the rear cable was. The top wasn't burnt except for barely inch or so
on the back lip over where the cables came out. There was a full bath towel
in that area covering the gap in between the tire well edge and the battery
box metal. It was shoved in there for insulation and maybe to keep the wires
off the metal. There was barely anything left of it though and not even a
tissues size worth uncharred. The back seat had a large burnt out section in
the center right where the cables were. The batteries as you can see were
melted together right near where the charcoaled wood was near the cable
openings. The battery with the post nearest the incident is only singed not
melted or warped or anything although the plastic tops is melted back all
around it. The only strange piece I can't connect was the rear left
headliner was melted in the rear left. Other then that everything is at the
same spot. The GFCI on the charger does test okay.
So far I have put full length conduits, good quality connectors and moved
the charger connection off the battery post in the rear. I don't know if any
of those things will make a difference but they sure make me feel safer
driving it. Please let me know if you have any other hypothesis'. For now
I'm guessing either a wire rubbed it's insulation off or the charger wire
melted where it crossed the opposite battery post and ignited the towel
which I must say is really weak.

The Evercel being cycled to death in the lab has passed the 100 cycle point.
A data summary is available at
http://www.manzanitamicro.com/evercel%20cycle%20102%20summary.gif
Note that the number across the bottom is in sequences. A sequence is either
a charge or a discharge; therefore a charge, discharge, charge is three
sequences.
When I got the battery, I was told that it is a reject and had spewed about
two cups of electrolyte before being removed from the pack. I was told that
the battery is rated at 84 ampere hours but it is now returning only 79
ahrs.
Another thing I noticed is that if the battery sits for a while between
cycles, the capacity is lower. I don't know if this is a thermal issue or a
self discharge issue.
Shop temperature was in the mid 40's when the testing started and is now in
the mid 30's.
It took several cycles before the battery capacity came up. The full data on
these cycles is available from the bottom of the Manzanita Micro download
page at http://www.manzanitamicro.com/download.htm. The remaining sequences
look identical to the final sequences in Evercel cycling report 4 therefore
I did not add to this report and make it any bigger. 3 Meg is plenty big, It
would be about 8 Meg if I added all the data to that file. In this file,
there is indication that there was a bad cell in the battery.
Sequences 10 and 38 where the capacity increased significantly were also
significant in during that those charge cycles, the battery got hot. I would
say 90F in a 40F ambient. The rest of the cycles were I was going easy on
the battery trying to keep it under 50F in a 40F ambient built capacity very
slowly. In both these cases, the battery went into minor thermal runaway but
that is what built the capacity. In both cases the thermal runaway occurred
at less than10 amps and the temperature did not melt anything. On cycle 10
the negative end of the battery got hot and on cycle 38 then positive end of
the battery got hot. Between cycle 10 and cycle 38 the bad cell problem was
quite visible but was invisible after cycle 38. Apparently, two cells were
not working right before cycle 10, then one of them broke in on cycle 10
leaving only one bad cell until cycle 38 when it finally broke in leaving
the entire battery working correctly.
Between sequences 140 and 180, I experimented with how much overcharge was
necessary to keep capacity stable. This showed that about 5% overcharge is
necessary to maintain capacity.
I plan on continuing to run 5 cycles a day for another month or two to see
if the battery dies a violent and sudden death or it degrades gracefully
over time.
Any comments, questions, suggestions or alternate theories that might be
helpful are welcome.

I hope no one took my post as a negative comment on EVs. As far as I'm concerned my
trip was a great victory. There were two things that made this more of an adventure
than it could have been. The primary VIN # had been removed from the car and I wanted
to keep the orginal VIN instead of having a new one assigned. That would have been
easier. The other problem is that my batteries are shot. I knew that when I purchased
the car. My plan is to debug the car, especially the charger, on this pack and get a
new set of batteries in the spring. That decision limits my range. If I had taken
Bruce's advice back when I purchased the car and replaced the pack straight away, this
trip might have been easier. Right now I'm learning bunch on a pack that I plan to
replace rather than murdering a new one. It's still doing most everything I need. I
don't normally need to do 63 miles in a day! I also could have put it on a trailer and
hauled it down to CHP. That would have been easy but I like!
a challenge ;) I'm looking forward to the spring with a new pack, smarter charger
(working on it), both controllers working all the time (just fixed that) and my new
sound system (not exacly Wayland but I like it).

I also have tried contacting them. But given the holidays, I would not
count them out until next Monday. Some people do take vacations. And I
don't think Evercel is that big, so everyone may have just taken the
holiday at the same time. They will be swamped when they do get back. :-)

Please POST what city the DMV office you are having difficulty
with. Also, state what conversion your have. Did you make it
or is it an out-of-state registration (or what)?
...
My personal experience is too old. I registered my S-10 Blazer
Conversion in 1992 at the Santa Clara DMV. It was easy. The
conversion company had provided me with the papers, and I went
to my pre scheduled DMV appointment.
I showed the inspector my EV, he checked the: horn, lights,
mirrors, and then we went for short drive.
I ws checked off and given the paper registration to put in
the window. A month later I got my plates and stickers. It
is registered as ' E ' for Electric.
Today, I bet all that is better. Perhaps others in CA will
give their experiences.

Registration should be no problem. If the car is not converted
professionally, then they will inspect it to be sure it is electric. Then
they put the E on your registration. Even though my Blazer was
professionally converted, they required an inspection. Some conversion
owners have said the E type gets changed from year to year and they have to
go in for another inspection, but this never happened to me in the six years
I had that vehicle.
There is an ARB check on conversions for the HOV sticker now because they
want to make sure the car will go fast enough in the car pool lane. But
this is only for the sticker, not for registration.

The DMV only seems to recognize certain manufactured EVs as such. We filled
out the forms to try and register, no luck. The DMV just circulates you to
the Air Resources Board and around the block a few times. Anybody else have
this happen? Know how to register? It would be noce to pick up of a few of

Hi Mark,
I once had twenty (20) 12 volt deep cycle marine batteries in series
powering a 230 volt 10 hp Westinghouse Shunt Wound motor (that I still
have) and one day one of those batteries just blew its top off for no
known reason other than manufacturing defect. I wonder if one of those
batteries in your car had a manufacturing defect, just shorted out while
charging, and caused the damage.

It does look like the company might have disappeared. If they were
shut down only for the holidays, there would likely be at least
automated messages to that effect
I hope you haven't sent them money for prepayment for batteries.

My Zivan NG3 has been erratic lately. Up until today, this was the
failure mode: The fans come on, but no output current with the charge
indicator light quickly cycling through to green.
Two days ago I replaced one of the AC input terminals on the PCB. The
metal had fatigued and was ready to break. The failure mode remained.
Next I replaced the microcontroller with a spare kindly provided by Art
Mander. Surprise... the charger worked. I did some battery baby
sitting as I confirmed a proper charge algorithm. I put the cover on
and it worked perfectly for two shallow cycles. Yesterday it failed
again after the third cycle. I bulk charged with my off board Bycan and
walked away in frustration.
This morning, I plugged in the Zivan just for the heck of it and it
decided to work... for a while. After 20 minutes or so I went out to
check it. Uh-oh... all is quiet. No lights, fans, or anything. I
unplugged it, and checked the circuit breaker in the wall panel. It was
tripped. I reset it and then plugged in the Zivan.
SSSSSSNNNNNNAP! Post mortem examination revealed a piece of the Q2
power transistor lying on the board. The output fuse did not open, and
the bridge rectifier is OK.
Since I don't recognize the logo and can't locate a cross reference,
maybe one of you knows the answer? Here's a description of the part:

THE 2002 EVA/DC AWARDS
The new year promises to be a challenging one for the EV community. With
EV-1 owners in their last weeks of leases, hybrids gaining in popularity,
the Ford TH!NK City in limbo and the California Air Resource Board cowing to
the auto makers, what better way to end the year then to honor those who
made an influence in 2002.
Now the awards . . .
SCROOGE
Without a doubt GM earns the dubious distinction as this year's Scrooge. The
EV-1, one of the most technically advanced EVs offered to the automotive
consumer, will soon end up as nothing more then a twisted conglomeration of
plastic, aluminum and silicone as it meets its fate in the jaws of a
crusher. For those spending final days with their "Tiny Tims" this is a year
of mourning. Unfortunately, no Ghost of Christmas Past, Present or Future
will unshackle GMs resolve to deep-six the EV-1 program.
GRINCH
Ford, whose better idea was to produce a neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV)
for the masses with the TH!NK City, has taken the program to new heights . .
. a cliff that is. The program has since been dropped. "Who" will take over
the program? That is still up in the air at the moment. Hopefully, under new
management, the spirit of the TH!NK will continue . . . with whoever that
may be.
SANTA CLAUSE
This year's Santa Clause award goes to the California Air Resource Board
(ARB) for their generous gift to the auto makers . . . a clause in the form
of a reprieve to delay the EV mandate. The lawyers for the auto industry
made a list and Santa's elves, the CARB lawyers, checked it twice. Santa
determined the little boys and girls in Detroit were very good after all.
FROSTY THE SNOWMAN
Just when you thought Ex-GM CEO Robert Stempel has melted away he magically
appears to announce plans to produce an affordable four-passenger EV.
Stempel, who is currently Chairman of the Board of Energy Control Devices,
won't elaborate but says his company will supply the batteries. Hopefully,
his dream of a mass-produced EV won't melt away like those before him.
SHINING STARS
This award is presented to all the die-hard EVers in the world who continue
to rally behind the EV and those who continue to believe EVs are an
environmentally viable form of transportation and a means to reduce our
dependency on foreign oil.
Congratulations to all our winners and Have a Happy New Year.

I finally got EVDash working on a Palm M100 with my EMeter. Turns out I
had a bad serial cable my first attempt....
I did NOT need a null-modem, just a straight through serial extension
cable, I then plug the M100 serial cable into that. My biggest problem is
that I need to find a serial cable with less bulky plugs. This one is big
enough that it just barely wedges into the Emeter (too many cables and
things in the way), and I can't get it's hold-down screws to engage.
I could probably plug the M100 cable directly into the EMeter - but I need
it to sync with the computer, and it's really awkward connecting to the
EMeter. (Inside the dash of the Sparrow.)

Has anyone experimented with using the irda port to connect to the
E-Meter? Make a custom holder for the Palm with a built in irda
port, which is connected to the E-Meter. Modify the EVDash
software to receive the data on that port.

You probably created the link with an HTML tag (maybe using the "Insert
Hyperlink" menu selection). The list server strips HTML and you get the
LP8.2: HTML/Attachments detected, removed from message thingy. The other
links in blue you have seen were just typed into the message without marking
it as a link. Many e-mail readers (such as Outlook Express that I use and
apparently whatever you use) look for the www. format and show it in blue
and make it a link.

Sure enough I saw one for sale yesterday with 4 speed a 83 and in good shape
. The guy had 200K and said he go almost 40 mpg . Doesn't sound like your
building a race car (nothing wrong with that) ,. I like the t 105 or other
golf cart bats for a conversion were speed is not everything. I had both
the 6.7 motor and the 9 in my 2nd conversion and if your buying them new
then I would get a least an 8" it's not that much more . Are you thinking
of one of those 6.7 motors in the bargain trader. ? off the top of my head
I'd say that will give a 40 mile at 40 mph and top speed 60 . What I
noticed with the little motor is at a certain point the eff drops off quite
a bit , it might go 80 miles at 30 mphs but when you push a little more
current into the motor it just runs out in heat.

The adptor plate is where you can end up spending some money . another
reason for going with 8'or 9' .as you may not be able to use the plate
form the 6.7 to a 8/9 later on .

So you have gotten to ride in a few conversions ?
If so your lucky . Lots of people end up doing them with out every getting
to try one .
(yes, that John) Wayland suggested the very plan I have described

JW suggesting a 6.7 motor ? Hope he starts posting again I miss his storys.

If I do one I'd go
9 warp motor
156 DCP 1200 amp (or 600)
13 yt bats
There is one problem with this setup ,, MONEY.
But think of the fun you'll have blowing the doors off thoses V8's with that
little festiva

Here are a few thoughts on "cheapest conversion"
I did a hyndia with a 6 hp 36v fork lift motor and ran it on 72 volts . 72
volt controllers are cheap and I got this one used, It would go 30 miles at
35 and a top speed of about 50 . All this may sound good but it did not come
close to a "regular" conversion with 9" adc motor and 120 volts/ 400 amp
controller. It did cost 1/2 as much but now to upgrade any one part without
upgrading everthing would not help it's poor proformance. Buy spending a
little more money you can have a car that will profrom quite a bit better.
The parts are only half the story , there is the time in putting them in
(Lee said it well in his post) . Have you driven a conversion ?
