Hi All,
Due to an engagement I need to do at the Lions Club
April 12, I've put together an EV Powerpoint document.
It's 9 megs or so, but has pics of the EV-1, the EV+,
Nissan's Altra, Toyota's RAV-4EV, as well as 3rd party
conversions, such as my Mike Brown VoltsRabbit, and of
course, CivicWithACord. It discusses design issues
briefly, advantages to EV usage, history, and future
of EVs, as well as how to learn more.
I have yet to use the DVD burner on a machine my
brother gave me. Quite the novice in that respect. So
the question is how to get it to those of you who are
interested. At this point, I'd say for $7, I can burn
more with the help of friends, and include postage.
Sound fair?
I'm certain you'll find the presentation to be of
tremendous help in your own presentations. And now
that the EV-1 is going to the trashbin, we must keep
its' history alive.
peace,

Yeah, it's at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The guy you want to see is the

Fire in the hole. I get continuity between the 12v and 120v systems. The nut welded to a 12v and 120v connection. The Electravan runs but no way to charge yet. It is arcing between the 12 & 120v pins. 20v between one 12v and one 120v pin. 24v between the other. 3v between the positive and negative 12v pins. Yuck. There is a melted wire somewhere. I'll have to do a visual search. LR..................

--- Begin Message --- When I leased my EVPlus back in 1997 Honda claimed it would cost $60,000. At the time I would have had reservations paying that much for it. I would certainly be willing to pay that for it now. In 2002 I was ready to pay $42,000 for a Rav4-EV, but Honda told me I could keep my EVPlus for as long as it met my needs. I would gladly pay that for a Rav4-EV today.

I'm not so interested in a used car. I want to put my own scratches on it and grind my own dirt into the floor mats. Even so, Rav4-Ev's coming off their leases are going for ~$35,000 on eBay; I might convince myself to go for one of those.

I'm not interested in the EV-1. It simply isn't designed for a 6'4" 200lb out of shape middle aged man. It is just to hard to get into and out of the vehicle and ducking to keep my head from being wedged into the roof is uncomfortable.

Somebody talked about importing electric Smart cars. That would work for me. They look small, but are quite accessible and there is enough head room for me. I bugged this dude once a month for a while, until it became clear he wasn't going to be able to overcome the hurdles.

I came across a survey from AC Propulsion a few months ago which I filled out and submitted. I also sent email to their sales address asking where I could send a deposit for a converted Scion (both the xA and XB would work for me). I never got a response.

My only option is to do my own conversion. As I plan this multi-year endeavor, I read this list for its wealth of knowledge.

GM claims that it's service, parts and legal issues which makes them smash
the EV1's instead of selling them.
What a lame excuse.
There are a lot of antique or discontinued cars out there which haven't
caused their manufacturers to go broke, whether or not they continue to
supply parts or service.

It seems that GM wants it both ways: To avoid CARB rules, it publicly says
that there's no demand for pure EVs, then turns around and ignores the
demand by EV-1 former leasers to have these fine EVs sold to them.

How have they avoided purjuring themselves thus far?

Hello Listers,

Up on Ebay.co.uk is a 40 HP DC motor controller,
might be useful for someone?

ebay.co.uk item no 7500472964

I have no connection with the seller, just happened to notice it....

Also on ebay is a 2 MW induction motor & 11 kV transformer, those
might be a bit big though unless someone's building their own locomotive ;-)

I heard the report about the EV1 vigil and arrests on NPR last night. They had
some GM rep on
saying how they contacted all the lease holders and asked who wanted to keep
the car. He said only
50 wanted to. If that's not a lot of BS, I don't know what is.

Quins support good going campaign

NEC Harlequins support the London wide good going campaign

[We encourage] supporters to join the good going campaign.
good going aims to reduce traffic congestion and vehicle
emissions, which is one of the biggest issues facing London.

Reducing these could make a real difference to the health and
quality of life for everyone in the capital.

We would ask as many of the supporters as possible attending this
match to choose the healthier option when travelling to the game
at Twickenham, and to future matches at the Stoop.

We will be promoting the benefits of walking, cycling, using
public transport, car sharing or using low emission vehicles in
the matchday programme.

As part of Quins support for good going, new signing Geo Cronje,
along with Andy Reay and Joe Mbu took time out from their busy
training schedule to show their support for the good going
campaign by test driving Richmond's Council's electric car.

Green Car Journal Highlights Volvo's Innovative 3CC Concept
Car; Magazine to Be Distributed at 2005 L.A. Auto Show

IRVINE, Calif.,/PRNewswire/ -- Volvo's 3CC concept
car, which won "Best Design" and five Gold Standards at
the recent Michelin Challenge Bibendum environmental competition
in Shanghai, China, has caught the attention of editors at the
environmentally-focused Green Car Journal.

An auto enthusiast magazine that blends performance, environment,
and energy diversity in equal measures, the magazine's
Winter 2004 edition showcases the 3CC as its featured cover
vehicle. At the L.A. Auto Show, the first 4,000 attendees who buy
the official auto show guide will receive a free copy of this
Green Car Journal issue -- a $5.99 value -- courtesy of Volvo.

"We chose the Volvo 3CC as a focal point for this
issue's cover because it's a groundbreaking vehicle on
many levels," says Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the
Green Car Journal. "Not only does the 3CC combine classic
Volvo styling cues with exotic gull-wing doors and a tapered, 2+1
seating configuration, but it does so with a highly advanced
lithium-ion battery electric drivetrain. That's a step apart
from the crowd, which these days is largely focused on hybrid and
fuel cell concepts."

In its coverage of the 3CC, the magazine compares this innovative
electric car with Volvo's circa-1993 ECC, or Environmental
Concept Car. Both advanced technology concepts were created at
the Volvo Monitoring & Concept Center in Camarillo,
California, with the aim of pushing the envelope in environmental
vehicle design and propulsion.

"Just as the earlier ECC forwarded new thought in hybrid
propulsion with its high-speed turbine-generator design,"
adds Cogan, "today's lithium-ion 3CC innovates with its
thousands of smallish laptop computer-style batteries, which
power this zero emission vehicle to impressive levels of
efficiency and performance."

This focus on environmental performance doesn't stop with
concept cars, as Volvo's environmentally conscious lineup
clearly shows. In fact, even the largest of Volvo's vehicles
feature industry-leading advancements that maximize efficiencies
and minimize emissions.

Just one example is the new ULEV II-certified, 311 hp V8 that
will be available in the popular XC90 SUV early this year. This
engine achieves extremely low emissions levels with the use of
advanced technologies including four catalytic converters, two of
these located at the intake manifolds to enable quick warm-up for
treating exhaust gases. The engine also incorporates higher
idling rpm, optimized ignition, and a lean air/fuel mixture at
start-up to minimize emissions when the engine is cold, a time
when disproportionately high levels of harmful emissions occur.

Volvo has achieved many environmental milestones over the years.
Recently, these have included introduction of the PremAir(R)
radiator that converts ground-level ozone into oxygen; worldwide
availability of ULEV (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) engines;
introduction of the efficient and low emission XC90 SUV; the
debut of the PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) S60 and V70;
and ULEV-II certified low emission vehicles including the S40 and
XC90 V8. Information on Volvo's commitment to the
environment, including Volvo's Environmental Product
Declaration, can be viewed online at www.epd.volvocars.se/us.

Green Car Journal is available at newsstands and through the
print magazine's companion website, Green Car Journal
Online, at www.greencar.com.

VCNA, part of the Volvo Car Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden,
provides marketing, sales, parts, service, technology and
training support to Volvo automobile retailers in the United
States, and oversees Volvo operations in Canada, Mexico and
Puerto Rico.

Volvo has been building cars with Safety in mind for over 75
years. The 2005 Volvo Cars model line-up includes: the
award-winning new S40 and its wagon counterpart the all-new V50;
the award-winning XC90; the sporty S60 sedan -- including the
award-winning performance sedan -- S60 R and the performance
wagon version -- V70 R; the flagship S80 luxury sedan; versatile
V70 wagon and rugged XC70 (Cross Country); and, the C70
convertible.

HOT WHEELS: Neil's MGA, outfitted with some flashy custom

Los Angeles Times/Mel Melcon
Running on MG It's the imperfections a car fanatic loves
By Dan Neil [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] Los Angeles Times

Every few days someone asks me what kind of car I drive. Since I
am The Los Angeles Times' auto critic, the curiosity is only
natural, I suppose.

Typically, people own only one or two vehicles and they are
invested in them, financially and existentially, right up to
their necks. Trouble is, they are never entirely sure if the cars
they own are the right ones for them -- it's like married couples
sitting together at a party, watching all the other spouses and
wondering if they have made the best choice.

When people ask me what I drive, they are seeking some expert
endorsement, some hieratic wisdom about cars. I wish I had some.
The truth is, there is no fool like a car fool.
[...]
Lately I've been considering converting
the MGA to a battery-electric car. This would be a technical
challenge, for sure, and would probably cost me a small fortune.

Such a project would take thousands of Dan-hours of labor,
endless days of wrenching and fiddling and pondering, digging
through toolboxes and flipping through parts catalogs, just me
alone with my car.

Sounds like heaven.

THIS WEEK China Revives Market for Plug-in Electric Vehicles
February 2, 2005 Reporting by Roddy Scheer

[image http://www.emagazine.com/images/upload/china.jpg ]

In an effort to help commuters traveling short distances while
reducing smog in urban areas, China is ushering in a new
generation of plug-in electric vehicles powered by cutting edge
batteries. Long ago abandoned by U.S. automakers due to short
ranges and difficult cold starts, plug-in electric vehicles are
all the rage in China today, especially for those formerly
reliant on bicycles to get around or unable to afford gasoline
for internal combustion cars.

At the most recent Challenge Bibendium, a green car exhibition
sponsored by Michelin and named after the company's mascot,
Chinese automakers showcased electric scooters and bikes already
in widespread use. According to government officials, as many as
one million Chinese have forsaken their traditional cars for
electric bikes and scooters. China also hopes to replace
thousands of exhaust-spewing diesel-powered buses with cleaner
electric models for use during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as a
showcase for the development of cleaner mass transit.

Environmentalists around the world are cheering the surge in
electric vehicle use in China, as old-fashioned internal
combustion engines have led to persistent smog problems in cities
such as Beijing and Shanghai. But while a transition to electric
bikes and scooters in cities should help urban Chinese breathe
easier, it will not necessarily help in the battle against global
warming, as much of the electricity will actually be generated
using fossil fuels.

I wish this inbox could handle 9 megs, so I'll just email
you my other adress later tonight, Bob. I'll gladly look at
it. Due to university computers not being exactly
private/encrypted, I wont be sharing that adress at the
moment.

I've made a similar presentation already at my campus. I
won't post it here due to the fact that it covers
specifically the political influence on the EV's supposed
failure. Took quite a bit of digging information, and it was
chopped down to 10 pages to be presentable within a limited
7 minute time period. So much more could have been covered
it's not even funny. If anyone wants it, email me and I'll
give it to you. 11 pages, one page with photos and stats of
some EVs(Ellica, TZero, Electrovaya Maya100, AC Propulsion
Civic, ect.), and like 3 pages with references listed. Be
aware of plenty of curse words used and a somewhat
unprofessional format, just the way I like things.

I also have another presentation in the works that is huge,
like now at 100+ pages. It will be sent to various web sites
covering EVs as their central subject matter and posted on
EV forums and political forums of many slants just to gauge
people's reactions. That data could be useful later in the
event I gather it. I posted part of it when people were
asking for info on hydrogen fuel cells on this list. Be
warned, I reference everything, but I have a lot of
backtracking to do given this document's age and the need to
bring some references up to date and to make some things
more specific(Differentiating between hydrogen ICE and fuel
cells on every occassion it is mentioned, so no one gets
confused, for example).

ANTI-DRINK DRIVING / FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE

Red Limo electric vehicles begin plying the route between Soi
Thong Lo and Ekamai yesterday, offering a free ride to revellers.

A free shuttle service, called ''Red Limo'', has been launched
for revellers in the Thong Lo area as part of the government's
anti-drink driving campaign.

In a joint effort between Wattana district office, liquor dealer
Riche Monde (Bangkok) and the Electric Vehicle Co, the shuttle, a
12-seat electric vehicle, will set off from the Wattana district
office.

The service, which was inaugurated yesterday, will link
entertainment venues on Soi Thong Lo and Ekamai with the BTS
Thong Lo station. It will be available nightly, except on Sunday,
from 8pm to 1am until April 30.

Worarat Charoonsmith, Rich Monde's marketing manager, said the
Red Limo service would help prevent revellers using their cars,
reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents while promoting
the government's energy-saving policy.

This was the second time the state and private agencies have
joined together in such a project. The first, with the use of a
petrol-driven vehicle, took place in December 2003.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Panit Wikitset said the project, if
successful, might be expanded to other areas.

That was one awesome article when I came across it over a
year ago. A real world 140 mile range back then, on battery
packs that would have cost as much or even less than an
internal combustion engine with production volume for packs
for 20,000 cars a year according to a slide presented by
Stemple another lister mentioned back in '98.

Use a larger pack, like what was placed in Solectria Geo
Metros, and real-world 200 mile highway ranges were reality.
Of course, we all know Chevron-Texaco...

Batteries weren't perfect though, to be fair. A few problems
with charge retention and overheating, but they were
miniscule in comparison to problems and costs associated
with the ICE. The more extreme cases had people running
their air conditioning in hot desert weather in reverse,
heating their cabin to cool their batteries with a fan. That
would suck. Other than extreme 110+ degree weather, the
Ovonics were absolutely f------ perfect for the needs of
normal people. And they were slated to last at bare minimum
100,000 miles, more likely 250,000 miles. And no cold
weather drawbacks!

Ditch the AC drive, and the EV1 could have potentially been
$20,000-ish new in mass production, and have seen improved
acceleration performance with about 10% less range and no
regen. Definately would have given cars 50% more expensive a
run for their money in such a scenario.

I hear a lot about the EV1's charger being prone to causing
fires. Wouldn't have been that hard to fix. Just listen to
the car's powertrain designer, Alan Cocconi. The inverter
was meant to be the charger, and not the expensive $4,000
Magnecharger BS General Motors tried to peddle to fatten its
wallet more. Cocconi's design was cheap, and could have used
a normal 110V or 220V outlet. Just the way it should be.
Simple, cheap, low-maintenance. Less of your money to auto
industry pockets.

The EV1 appeared to be quite a car. Shame I never got to
ride in one, drive one, or even see one in person. The big
pisser is all the government money that went into it. GM has
the nerve to call it their exclusive property? The taxpayers
paid for it. GM was expected to sell the cars the the public
and had the potential to do so, as the technology was there
and it worked. The demand was there, if studies are to be
believed, IIRC the Wall Street Journal reported a study that
the demand for EVs was 12% of California's new car market.

I'm sure if someone like Wayland or Wilde would be given
that kind of money to design an affordable family EV, we'd
be seeing a new era of cheap musclecars that use no
gasoline. I think a design based on the Tatra T77a would be
interesting. In 1938, it had a .21 coefficient of drag. A
full-sized luxury car.

http://www.ltv-vwc.org.uk/W_Spin/ws_mar_2003/Tatra-history-pt1.htm

A full-sized electric hotrod on this design could have
stunning range and efficiency, and with a 2-speed
transmission, INSANE top speed(You'd have to govern it at
about 140-ish for safety reasons so idiots that improperly
toy with it won't sue, although I wouldn't want to have a
limiter!). 2,300-2,500 pounds sealed lead acid could take it
150+ miles, with quick charge capability using one of
Rudman's systems. A car like that could be built for the
range with a high battery weight like that, like 65% of the
car's weight assuming a family of 4 inside. Not to mention,
with a Zilla 2k in that bitch, the acceleration... *evil
grin*

The Dodge Magnum would be put to shame.

Believers in EV1 electric cars say GM wants to crush the future
GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss said emotion and enthusiasm have
clouded the fact that its electric car assembly line never
operated beyond 8 percent of capacity. By John Bogert

It's a rotten day in Burbank on the whole, with rain threatening,
cruel winds blowing and Chelsea Sexton dug in outside the General
Motors training plant. This was on Wednesday, 13 days into what
she calls the 24/7 EV1 Vigil or the California GM Car-sit and she
ain't going anywhere. Not even the GM guards hassling her
6-year-old son can deter her from saving the doomed electric car
that so consumed her young life.

Red-haired and thin, the longtime El Segundo resident could pass
for a teenager. Fact is, she was only 17 when she went to work
selling Saturns and not yet 21 when the rechargeable EV1 came out
in 1996. The auto giant was looking for 13 wild-eyed devotees --
young, passionate electric car nut jobs who would take this new
concept between their teeth like capitalist versions of little
commies.

Chelsea did just that, practically marrying the sleek, two-door
car. Then she married an EV technician after seeing in this small
two-seater the same thing I did on roll-out day at a now defunct
dealership on the Westchester/Culver City line.

With one moving engine part and no muffler, tailpipe, gasoline,
radiator or transmission and none of the ghastly fluids needed to
feed these things -- in addition to producing almost no noise or
local emissions -- Electric Vehicle Uno looked like the future.

"I'm a geek," said the bright-eyed Chelsea, who is still more
passionate about this seemingly lost cause than anyone should be
on such a grim afternoon. "I'm the little girl that would pull up
beside a Viper and take it off the line. I'm one of the people
who helped dispel the golf cart myth."

With the electric dream played out, she is brokenhearted, leading
me along a perimeter fence to see 78 of the cars in a back lot
awaiting destruction. Chelsea calls this "incarceration," listing
the serial number of each in chalk on the sidewalk out front and
displaying pictures of crushed machines in a way that reminds me
of animal rights protests.

What follows is charge and counter charge, vigil keeper vs. GM
spokesmen, with Chelsea and her hard core group of former EV
leasees swearing to stay out here until the company decides to
sell back the condemned cars.

But what is undeniably real is the enthusiasm the young sales
staff brought to their task, selling all 800 of the cars released
to them with promises from GM that they would make more if the
demand existed.

"Trouble was, GM would never tell us what constituted demand, so
we compiled a list of people who were willing to wait for one,"
she said. "Eventually, GM wouldn't just settle for not building
more cars, they wanted the ones they had leased back no matter
how much their owners begged to keep them."

Chelsea and friends took on the no-demand issue, claiming they
found 80 people willing to buy the remaining cars for the $24,671
residual lease price sans warranty, liability, parts and
service.

"By Feb. 26 we had offers of $1.9 million to buy cars that had
'no demand,' " said the woman who might well have been the most
product-dedicated GM employee ever.

As you might expect, GM's take is from another planet. Spokesman
Dave Barthmuss, after complimenting all the enthusiasm, said
emotion and enthusiasm have clouded the fact that their electric
car assembly line never operated beyond 8 percent of capacity.

He even claims that a GM survey of the above-mentioned waiting
list turned up only 50 people who were actually willing to deal
with its drawbacks.

"It was a great vehicle but there is no such thing as a release
from liability so we can't sell them back," Barthmuss said. "Now
is the time to build on that technology and move on to fuel cell
technology and a viable mass market vehicle."

This leaves Chelsea in the gathering storm doubting everything GM
contends: "It's a betrayal of a car that is a symbol of what is
possible. Crushing it crushes a dream."

Effort to save EV1 cars fails By Dana Bartholomew, Staff Writer

BURBANK -- Protesters vying to save the last of General Motors'
futuristic electric cars on Friday briefly blocked the first of
many truck trips to the crusher.

"They took the first load away -- we tried to stop them but none
of us were willing to get arrested," said Paul Scott, organizer
of a day-and-night vigil in its 16th day hoping to save the last
77 EV1s in California stored at the General Motors Training
Center in Burbank.

An auto transport picked up seven of the torpedo-shaped sports
cars once leased to 800 avant guard motorists in the Golden State
and Arizona, a GM spokesman said. With the exception of some cars
to be sent to museums and schools, the majority will be
recycled.

Electric car proponents had weathered the worst rainy season in a
century to save what they consider the best zero-emissions car
ever made.

At noon, Gary Raymond blocked a transport many said was ferrying
their favorite cars toward their demise. When police asked him to
move 15 minutes later, he calmly stepped aside.

"These are perfectly good cars, these cars could be on the
street, to be used for zero-emissions transportation," said
Raymond, 53, of Thousand Oaks, standing vigil with his son Bud,
also an electric car fan.

Raymond, a sound man for the movie industry, also has a company
that produces 150-pound electric cars for the highway.

But while protesters want to buy their former lease cars, the
world's biggest automaker says it's time to turn them into
scrap.

Though EV1 enthusiasts insist there was a waiting list to lease
the car, General Motors, which spent $1.2 billion developing the
EV1, said there wasn't enough support to make it work. Because of
a legal obligation to warranty and service cars containing more
than 2,000 unique parts, General Motors maintains remaining EV1s
cannot be sold to enthusiasts.

"There is no longer a viable market for these vehicles," said
Dave Barthmuss, a spokesman for GM, which is staking its future
on hydrogen fuel cell cars. "This isn't a vehicle for the
shade-tree mechanic -- it's time for them to go to the ultimate
destination."

Proponents argue that, since Ford has agreed to sell its
remaining electric vehicles, GM could sell its EV cars as is.

"My car's still back there," said Bob Seldon, 57, a patent lawyer
from Santa Monica with a long face after the departing transport.
"I want it back -- it's the best car I've ever owned, the first
American car I've owned in several decades."

While much of Southern California was getting ready for the
Academy Awards on Saturday, 100 people showed up for a rally at
the General Motors Training Facility in Burbank to support a
group of electric vehicle devotees who have been protesting GMs
policies regarding its all-electric EV1 cars. Saturdays
gathering marked the eleventh day of a round-the-clock vigil that
began February 16.

Actor Peter Horton decided to go electric after noticing those
sleek, sort of George Jetson EV1s shoot by me with surprising
speed on the freeways. I thought, fine, I'll get an EV1. Along
with simply loving the car, there was a sense that if this
succeeded, it would significantly change the automotive
landscape. But as I lifted the phone to make the call, I had no
way of knowing that this simple, reasonable act was my first step
into the electric car wars.

Santa Monica resident Paul Scott helped organize the vigil and
the rally. Hes been hooked on electric, he says, since buying a
RAV-4 two years ago. It was incredible to me that these cars
arent available to anyone who wants one. When GM leased its
first 800 or so electric vehicles to residents of Arizona and
California in 1996, it looked like the beginning of a beautiful
friendship. Why, then, has GM seemingly snatched them back from
their happy owners?

There is no recall, says GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss. There is
no roundup. Our EV1 program ended in 2000 and the last lease
expired in August 2004.

The manufacturers, Scott says, are saying they had to end the
EV program because they had trouble leasing 800 cars in a
four-year period. Thats a lie. The truth is, GM hardly
advertised the EV1, yet they leased every one they made and had
long waiting lists for more. Had GM advertised the EV1 like it
does the Hummer, they would have sold tens of thousands.

GM spent over $1 billion to create a market, Barthmuss counters,
but one never materialized. We couldnt afford to keep spending
money on a program that only appealed to a small although
passionate group of consumers.

Scott points out that each of the 78 EV1s on death row in
Burbank has a driver eager to adopt it and willing to pay the
stated residual value of $24,761.60, as well as release the
company from future liability.

In 48 hours, we had 88 people sign up. And these are used
vehicles with no warranties, says Scott, who put his name down
for two.

People talk about releasing us from liability. There is no such
thing, Barthmuss contends. There are 2,000 handmade, unique,
one-of-a-kind parts on each one of these vehicles and theyre no
longer available. One very old, computerized component controls
the rear brakes. If it fails, there are no parts to replace it.
The vendors we worked with left GM in 1997 or 98 when we werent
able to order a high enough volume of parts to make it viable for
them.

Filmmaker Chris Paine is producing a documentary about the
circumstances that delivered, then did away with, the electric
car. He drove an EV1, until his lease expired.

GM built a fantastic car, he says, and I really loved driving
it. But never has a car not been available for sale at the end of
a lease. If GM was serious about their electric car program, why
wouldnt they make spare parts? And why did they destroy all
those cars in the desert that have all those spare parts on them?
This supports the contention made by many activists that GM never
meant this car to be successful.

Observes Scott, Forty percent of the auto industrys profit
comes from parts and service, according to the Alliance of
Automobile Manufacturers. EVs are so reliable, they need
virtually no parts or service.

People are willing to buy these cars without spare parts
availability and without liability, Paine continues. They just
want them saved. There are engineers that could keep the cars
going for years. Im not an attorney, but I understand that Ford
EV drivers negotiated with Ford, releasing them from liability.

The website for Paines documentary (www.evconfidential.com)
includes photos said to depict crushed EV1s at the GM Proving
Ground in Mesa, Arizona. But Barthmuss dismisses claims that GM
is destroying the cars.

What happens at the end of the EV1s useful life, he says, is
one of four things. The vehicles are donated to colleges and
engineering schools. They go to museums for display -- one is at
the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. They are used by
engineers in New York and Massachusetts to learn how they operate
in cold weather so they can transfer the technology to hybrids.
Other vehicles will be recycled, not crushed or scrapped or put
into the landfill.

GM decided that the EV1 would never appeal to a mass market.

The EV1 forced the consumer to make too many tradeoffs in their
transportation lifestyle, Barthmuss says. Battery technology
was never going to advance any further than it has today. The car
would never go more than 100 miles without recharging, and would
never charge in less than 6 or 8 hours. If were serious about
reducing the amount of fuel all of our vehicles use, we have to
have advanced technology that we can use in hundreds of thousands
even millions of units. The EV1 appealed to a very small
number of people.

Not everyone agrees.

Once upon a time, I drove a car that was made in America, emitted
nothing when I drove it, required little or no maintenance and
used American made electricity, laments Bob Seldon, a Santa
Monica attorney whose son dreamed of driving the EV1 to college.
My neighbors who drove it couldn't get the smiles off of their
faces. It was a winner designed by a team of unsung and largely
unknown heroes. GM decided it had to die.

With the lithium ion battery used in cell phones and laptops,
adds Scott, a car like the EV1 could go 300 miles. In Los
Angeles, there are cars doing 300 miles. Theyre designed by the
same Cal-Tech engineers who designed the EV1.

General Motors, Barthmuss explains, has shifted its focus to
hybrids and ultimately fuel cells, pointing to the companys
HydroGen3, a demo vehicle currently being tested in Japan. GM
and the entire auto industry believe that hydrogen is the
long-term fuel of choice.

There are between one and seven vigilers, as they call
themselves, on hand in Burbank at any given time. Its tough,
Scott admits. Ive pulled a couple 1-5 a.m. shifts. But were
going to go until we win. And well win when GM starts talking to
us and realizes what theyre doing is wrong.
