You know, I'm a real big fan of John Wayland! So I was thinking about showing
up Saturday morning with a truck full of
parts, and with a little help from my friends, leaving Saturday night with a
record setting EV. Maybe I can get the
Discovery Channel film crew to come down with me from Rock Tavern, NY(American
Chopper). (I doubt it, though maybe
Gadget can pull some strings)
P.S. Anybody have a Curtis programmer?

The VW pan is used pretty widely in kit cars of all types, but it was really
intended to get a substantial amount of support from the body that bolted to
it. (VW experts will tell you a stock steel body (bug or Ghia) is *not*
light.) I hadn't heard the pans tend to crack in buggies, but this is
probably part of the reason. Especially if you pile a bunch of batteries in
there. Take a look at the pic Ryan posted and you can see there really
isn't much in the way of rigidity in a bug chassis.
A couple of lifetimes ago I built a Fiberfab Avenger based on a VW chassis.
They had a crude but effective way of strengthening the pan. Basically a 3"
square tube ran from the cap over the rear trailing arm pivot to the lower
front torsion bar tube. A welded bracket allowed it to be bolted to the
rear trailing arm pivot (bottom two bolts) and a U-bolt held it to the front
torsion bar tube. Several bolts went through the pan and the stiffener tube
along its length. There might have been a bend in the stiffener tube to get
it around depressions in the pan.
Seems to me this would go a *long* way toward preventing cracks in your pan
by reducing flex.

Subject: AC Motor Suppliers
I am (once again) reviewing the market for AC motors and controllers -
purpose built for EVs. Here is the list that I have so far:
* Siemens Motors from Metric Mind - surplus units
* MES Motors from Metric Mind - although the large MES units are "vapour
ware" and are not in production
* Solectria from Electro Automotive
* Enova Systems - does not sell one off motors, only bulk purchases
* AC Propulsion - pretty pricey compared to the rest
Any other out there that are specially built for Electric Vehicles?
thanks

I have found several internet "EV Parts" stores that provide complete kits for
EVs with several different options on major components like controllers and
motors, etc.
I have not been able to find a single source internet site for batteries.
There are many battery sites available on the net including the manufacturers
sites, but I have not seen any real retail sites that sell different types of
batteries with a focus on EVs.
Has anyone seen a site that has Orbitals, Optimas, etc. for sale with up to
date pricing? If not, I wonder if a site like that would be something to
consider as an internet business? Any thoughts from the community?

That's about US$25,000 - quite a lot for a small car. (A few years ago,
before
the dollar weakened, it would have been more like $20k - not much better.)
For comparison, last time I checked a few years ago, most ICE minicars in
Korea cost between 7 and 10 million won. I really hope they succeed, but
I
really think this one will be a tough car to sell, in Korea or overseas,
unless
they can somehow cut the price by at least half.
GEO EV first started developing the no-emissions car last year
with 500 million won in capital.
My goodness. Imagine trying to develop a car in the US for $500,000! I
suspect that somebody dropped a couple of zeroes here.
I'll probably be in Korea for a couple of weeks next spring, so if they
actually
get it into production by then, I'll try to look them up. Maybe I can
tuck one
into my overnight bag. ;-)

I've dealt with Ken as well. Yes he's a phone kind of guy, but he will make
you happy. I wish him well in selling his business. If I was still in
SoCal, I'd consider buying it myself.
I'm not sure about this, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe
the only reason ADC supplies EV-optimized motors at all is because the EV
community asked them to. There's not enough volume for them to care in a
business sense. What makes it workable for them is that they only have to
deal with an east coast distributor (EV America) and a west coast
distributor (KTA). Other sellers get their product from these two
distributors. That leaves very little wiggle room on price.
ADC makes the "standard" EV motor, but they aren't the only game in town.
Warfield Electric makes drop-in replacements for the popular ADC motors, and
some believe Warfield makes a better product than ADC's. It's even slightly
cheaper. You can get them from Netgain (http://www.go-ev.com/) and other
sources.

I need to bench test a motor with my new pack but I'm not sure the best way to
do it. I have a 9"
ADC that hasn't been run in a long time and I want to hook it up to a new mini
pack I've put
together. The pack is made up of 20 1.2 volt NiCad cells that have been charged
to a pack voltage
of 27 volts. I'm guessing this is to high to connect directly to the motor so
I'm looking for a
good way to safely run the motor off the pack. I'd like to run the motor so I
know it's in
reasonable shape before I install it and I'd also like to use the motor to
exercise the pack so I
can charge it again.
How do I safely limit the juice flowing to the motor? (Just voltage or current
also?)
How low can I safely discharge the pack? (NiCads)
I'd prefer not to use long extension cords in buckets of water but...
Thanks

Yeah that is rather wide ratio's and heavy but
for drag racers may not be bad who need the strength.
Hopefully Keith will come up with the powerglide
unit that should fit our bill nicely.
I think B+M? drag racing transmissions makes
greatly modified PG's that might work. And racers
heard of them?

Hi everyone,
A new toy has appeared in Mellow Yellow's
electric playground....
...the Siemens system I bought from Carl Vogel has
finally arrived! It was pretty well packaged up in
a custom-made wooden crate - unfortunately I had
to destroy the crate to get the motor out, it was
so well held in! It's all in the garage, waiting
for me to build up a small pack to test it with
So now I have all this expensive hardware, but I
can't talk to it, as the data cable and
ISO9141-to-RS232 adaptor are missing. Arrgghh!
( don't worry, I'm talking to Victor and HEC about it,
it'll get sorted out I'm sure, eventually... )
Does anyone know if the Simotion inverter will
talk to other off-the-shelf OBDII diagnostic
widgets? The kind that let you hook your laptop
up to your car... obviously I'd need to run the
SIADIS software, it's more the interface hardware
that I'm interested in.
Also, I vaguely remember something about a group who
were trying to "hack" the data that the inverter
provides ( Victor, please look away for a moment ;-)
Did this get anywhere? Answers off-list, if you prefer..

What about contacting a local distributor and see about the price
considering the amount of batteries being purchased?

Maybe they'd be willing to be sure that all the batteries were off the
same pallet and from the same batch? Maybe a better price too since
we buy ~12 or more instead of just 1?

I have not been able to find a single source internet site for batteries.
There are many battery sites available on the net including the manufacturers
sites, but I have not seen any real retail sites that sell different types of
batteries with a focus on EVs.
The high cost of shipping makes batteries impractical as a "catalog" or
web business. Do your research online and find a local distributor. In
my case I called my local Interstate "all battery center" and asked
where he got his batteries from. He gave me the name of a different
Interstate battery store that turned out to be the area wholesaler for
all of South Texas. In EV quantities prices from the area wholesaler
were 10-15% less than direct from the store.

That guy wasn't too bright, lol
most people in business do not tell there sources, that is just dumb:-)

<<< But I was comparing cost, not energy content. >>>
I see. PG&E charges 11.4 cents/kwh and 97.6 cents/therm (100K btu) of NG. Local
gas stations charge ~$2.35, so for a 25% efficient ICE, that's 27.6 cents/kwh
for gasoline or 13.4 cents/kwh for NG.
<<< I also seem to recall throughout the years that most of the S-10 conversions
on the list posted an at the outlet consumption of 400-500wh per mile. >>>
Depends on the system (and the owner, it seems): One S-10 in the EV Album lists
50-80mi from a 120V pack of T-145s, Bruce's Blazer uses 100A with his pack
output at 125V at 55mph, and David Chapman's 1 ton cargo van gets 60mi from 36
Delphi 12v's.
<<< I can't get CNG, so I can't comment on cost. However, the Centro Bus system
in the city of Syracuse is 100% CNG fueled and they are not looking back. So
CNG may indeed be cheaper. I do know that based on current Energy mix in the
US, CNG
is the CLEANEST automotive fuel widely available. Notice I said the *US* mix,
not *my* mix of 50-50 hydro-wind. >>>
Better than mine, but our largest combusion-based power supply is from NG (do
you consider the waste from the power of the atom as the same kind of
"pollution"? 21% of our electricity comes from nukes).

Just for clarification I would venture to guess that the scooter market for
EV Parts is much less than 5% of our sales. When We expand with a European
distribution center later this year it will start with an inventory of
onroad EV parts only. We have an excellent working relationship with the new
owners of Advanced DC which I must admit is much better than with the
previous owners. They have been very helpful in the industrial market as
well. Another clarification, David Cloud is no way involved with Cloud
Electric.

Great idea Tim!
And thanks James for also coming out to the race and helping out. With all
the visitors and racers there, collectively there should be plenty of help
available to get Cody's car going.
Let us know if there is anything, tool wise you will need. I imagine you
will be bringing everything you can think of. But just let us know if you
don't have something that maybe those going could bring.
BTW, we plan to have an informal swap meet at the track so bring your unused
EV parts. Darin Gilbert came up with the idea.
I have a ton of information to share about the upcoming race including TV
coverage which I'll share soon.
See ya,

The situation could have been like this:
Let's say just for example that I worked there. Just a minimum wage
employee. If you came in and asked where we got the batteries from, I
would have told you...

Not sure about hooking up an OBD II sensor to the controller.
As for hacking the code, the idea was to hack the saved SIADIS files for
exporting to excel. The project was abandoned, as we discovered the export
facility in SIADIS. We did not try to hack the actual communication
protocol (too many cars to build).
Most people just use an old 486 laptop with DOS. A few have it working with
Win98, using some device drivers.
