Cant seem to SIFT thru all these days of info on Wrightspeed, to find
the links to some TV-station clips. I think the station was something
like KOVO-TV ( or KO...something...)
any way... there was a related download problem. There was a lo-res
file, for like a dial-up web connection, which I ( automatically )
viewed but quite fuzzy... then right next, was one marked for cable
modem speed. But when I "clicked" on IT, it just downloaded pages
and pages of CODE. In other words, neither of my 3 video viewing
programs ( QuickTime, MicrosoftMedia, Real/audioVideo ) would recognize
this STUFF and play the video... What is with THAT ???
I also wrote directly to Daryl the following message:

Darl why is it this .wmv movie just turn into pages and pages of CODE,
when I "Click" on it, rather than trigerring one of my 3 video playing
programs: quicktime, Windows Media, and real/audio/video which seem to
work with almost every video feed / download I come across..?
Would LOVE to see the Wrightspeed x1 in action !
http://www.darelldd.com/ev/movies/wrightspeed.wmv
--------------------------
My local guru suggested I download all the Pages of Code, and then try
accessing it with one of my media players... Question IS... Why won't
it just start playing Automatically ???

Right click the link and choose "save target as" and download it to
your hard drive. After it gets done downloading, then proceed to
watch it and it won't display code in your browser.

Hope we haven't got all the Web Guru's working on this for nothing, but
taking our local Web Guys advice, I down-loaded ALL the Code, and then
Saved it... and then "Clicking" on it as a .wmv file, and it played
SPLENDIDLY in MediaPlayer AOK.
Still ...It beggs the question... wonder why some files just play
straight away, and THIS one had to be handled differently ??

Hello Bob,
Next time, put a couple of exhaust tips sticking out, so now they have a
tailpipe to hook up to. Start up the motor and see what kind of readings they
will get.
I always like to put the biggest exhaust tips on my EV, something in the 6 inch
diameter range, so I can install 6 inch speakers in them, which I can make them
sound like any thing you what that will blow the person that follows too close
to see what I got back some. Blows there hood off but not the doors.
When I transported the Transformer I home from the Electric Fuel Propulsion
Company in Troy Michigan, I took the car to a testing center. We all knew what
the results would be, but we hook up all the sensors any way to the 12 volt
control wiring, motor temperature temperature sender, rpm sender and to the
battery exhaust fan pipe that went down and out like a tail pipe.
Ran the EV on the rollers up to 60 mph. Everything ran 0.00 except one thing
that we found out that the air was in the shop was a little dirty from all the
tire rubber dust on the rollers.

Maybe. You'd have to find the key for that graph to know for sure.

You don't need or want a filter capacitor; it does the wrong things.
First, it raises the average DC voltage to the peak of the AC line;
24vac would give 24vdc x 1.4 = 33vdc out. Too much for a 24vdc coil.
Second, the capacitor delays the drop-out time of the relay. This causes
extra contact wear and shortens life.
Use the bridge rectifier with no capacitor. The inductance of the coil
provides the filtering action by itself. 24vac rectified *without* the
capacitor produces 24vdc (average).
> It would be simpler to find an AC rated 24 volt relay though!
Yes. That's the bottom line.

They want you to buy this video (!) so seems like don't offer direct
downloads. I'm surprised John was able to do it. When I click
on download it is ready to "save as" FutureCrusch.gvp file which I
assume is the large video file. But when I specify where to save,
it saves only 1kb of ASCII text which is description of the content.
Here is what the site says in download FAQ section:
==================================================
Downloading and Purchasing
If I buy a video once, do I need to buy it again to watch it on another
computer?
No. Once you buy a video, you can download it to other computers up to
several times.
Why do I need the Google Video Player to watch videos I've purchased?
Most of the videos for sale on Google Video are copy-protected. The
Google Video Player allows you to watch this copy-protected content in
addition to other videos you download.
Why do I need to be connected to the Internet to view copy-protected videos?
Copy-protected videos are encrypted files. To decrypt these files and
allow you to view the video's content, the Google Video Player needs to
communicate with Google over an active Internet connection.
Can I use a Mac to watch videos I've purchased?
No. If you have a Mac, you can't watch purchased, copy-protected videos.
At this time, you can only watch videos that aren't copy-protected.
We look forward to offering more options in the future.
=============================================
So, John, what's the secret?

You could abuse them to death in 12 months. But if used normally, they
should last a few years.
Having used Sam's Club (Exide) golf cart batteries myself, I will say
that they are not as good as Trojans or USB; but they were cheaper and
easier to get. If you're after the maximum in range and life, get
Trojans or USBs. If you want 'em cheap and now, use the Exides.

Subject: Was exide batteries
So after seeing much debate mostly against but a few for the exide golf cart
batteries I have decided to really investigate other brands and
configurations. I'm very close to finishing the welding on my truck bed
which means paint is just around the corner and then batteries. I've got the
room for 20 6vts (System is 120 vt.) so that's probably my route since I'll
get the most range there. (Yet I really only need ~50 mile range 4-5 times a
month. Most days will be less than 10 miles total.)
What brands have shown the greatest life? Local availability would be great
but I'm within 1-3 hours of 5 decent cities (Cincinnati, Indianapolis,
Louisville, Nashville etc) And I'd like to keep my battery costs below
$1600.00.
With the moderate temperatures here (Central Kentucky extreme temps cold
here is ~10 F and hot may get ~95 F) would the building of a battery box
with heating / cooling integrated in really increase my useable battery
life? My rails are open as they are now (see:
http://www.electricsmart.com/ALFA/ALFA_IMG/ALFA_STRIP_3.jpg) but I have the
room to make two long aluminum boxes with an integral forced air cooling fan
and radiant heat pad in each box. This box could be on carrier wheels and
simply slide out onto a roller conveyor (I have in my shop) for battery
servicing. I have a friend with a sheet metal shop with really long breaks
so the box building would be pretty straight forward but is it really
needed??? It might cost ~$250 each box for the aluminum, heat pad and fans
so not too bad but other than a nice package what will it really get me??
Thanks to all for the advice.

What kind of controller -- AC or DC? DC controllers are less picky. AC
controllers can place restrictions on the length and type of wiring
between motor and controller.
Most of the concerns don't affect performance per se, but do affect
safety, noise, and other incidental things.

It runs in bursts. The topics keep changing. At the moment it seems to
be racing. At other times it may be on batteries, or the politics of
EVs, or the esoterics of design.
This is a big list with what, 1000+ subscribers? I suspect 90% of them

I tend to skim the daily list quickly, finger poised over the DELETE

The few that survive get read more seriously, or answered, or sometimes

I mentioned here that I was considering a car
in Maryland, and asked advice how to get it to NJ.
Some people suggest I post details and might find help.
I have formulated a plan that seems reasonable,
but I thought I would ask first if anyone
on the list would be able to help me do this
more easily...or what you think of my plan?
(my suspicion is that there aren't many people
close enough for this to be practical/economical;
peoples' time is money even if they are generous)
My research suggests that paying a 3rd party
to move a dead car would be cost prohibitive - $850,
and using all rented equipment would be alot also.
(even renting a box truck, the big enough truck would
cost about $400.)
1. buy a hitch for one of the "family" vans, i.e.,
a. My Honda would really be at its limit,
especially since the trip is 200 miles.
However, it would be a great Return on Investment,
as I'll need the hitch to schlep the car to DMV
for inspection. But, car would probably be on
a "dolly", i.e., rear wheels on pavement 200 miles.
b. My sister-in-law's van - Ford Club Wagon -
could probably rent the better tow trailer,
since the van is stronger - BUT I don't know
how strong it is, it's OLD.
2. Borrow a friend's van. I have a friendly community,
might be able to borrow an SUV or van with hitch,
in exchange for loaner of my car.
Both 1 and 2 are me driving a truck with a 4000 lb car in tow.
(have done similar, but am no truck driver, and eyes aren't
best for job, can you spell Toxoplasmosis?)
PS ironically, I don't need a ramp to unload at home,
as I have a retaining wall, I could just back up to that,
and roll onto my neighbor's driveway :-)
Thanks.
Seth
PS with this summer weather, I run now to finish the SnowblowEV.
Last week, I was sick enough to stay home and run power
to the driveway :-) Pictures to come.

My Sparrow currently uses about 195 Wh/mile.
I have 137 BB600 NiCd cell in it, for a nominal pack voltage of 164v,
and a peak charging voltage of 205v.
Since it has a DCP Raptor controller, I make sure the voltage is
below 195 before turning the car on. (Generally it drops down to
that within seconds of turning off the charger.)
My problem is that I need a little more range. With the current pack
and power usage, I have about a 33 mile range to 100% DOD. (without
using the heater or wipers!) My commute is 32 miles one way, and I
will likely need the heater and/or wipers.
I can add another 30 cells (36V) to the bird, and only make it medium
difficult to add water to the cells. (and a royal pain wedging the
charger in a new location.) This should give me another 20% range,
or about 6 miles more. Enough that I would feel ok to drive to work.
The problem is what to do with this extra power.
Adding them in series to the current pack goes over the controller voltage.
Making the pack 2 parallel strings gives me a 100V pack, which is too
low for the controller.
The only other thing I've been able to think of would be to get a 36V
to 164v DC-DC that can handle about 1800-2000 Watts.
AARRGGHH!!! So close and yet so far!

Hi Folks, I was just checking and that Vette is coming up at the rate of
fifteen votes per one of our electrics. That dude must have some serious
mojo prom queen friends to out do our EV List. He probably has a job at
Microsoft :-) We at least might be able to hold on to John for Car of the
Month. It is now time to get hold of your relatives and people you gave up
on over ten years ago as friends and get them to vote :-)

I'm hoping to build a high power DC drive system modelled after JW's WZ.
Well, it's fun to dream, right? We'll see how it goes.

Hello to All,
The opening page at Dragtimes.com just changed. Now, in the upper left
corner there's new wordage referring to two new featured pages, one for
'Muscle Cars' and one for 'Electric Cars'! How cool is this?

I want to point out that you really don't want to tow something heavier
than the vehicle your driving without trailer brakes. If you try you
will find that the vehicle in back is doing the driving - without
brakes.
Actually, check your state laws. You may find the legal limit of towing
without brakes in back is a lot less (like 40 or 50% of the tow
vehicles weight.) It would be real annoying to tow your vehicle in for
inspection and get a ticket on the spot.
Another minor point is that if you are flat towing a car you *cannot*
back-up!

I have a fairly low cost, possible, solution. Use the extra batteries to
power and inverter and run the charger off the inverter while you're at
work. Inverters are cheap these days.
Effeciency will suck, but it might give you enough extra miles to be doable.
