I thought this is where to put files ?? Maybe not ?
I thought adding the alltrax would be easier on the contactor,
motor, clutch, trans, etc....

All:
Well the 700 watt hub motor was clunking, and I swapped it out for a
non-clunking copy.
Now I've got the hub motor apart, and I can see what was clunking: two of
the ten stator magnets are loose from the apparently aluminum stator frame.
I'm glad I replaced it!
What adhesive will work to bond the stator magnets in place? I'm thinking of
superglue, or perhaps JB Weld.
Any experience on this to share?

Actually the e-volks kit needs a diode to get regen., when the
contactor is disconnected (let off on pedal). I have been able to
get regen. by leaving the pedal down (contactor connected) and
downshifting , but it is wierd and I question how much regen. one
really gets .
I am not sure one can get regen. with the alltrax and again how much
value is in it. My Tidalforce had regen. but did not use it much ....

Most bikes are homemade conversions.
According to the http://www.vogelbilt.com/home.html ,
you can order the Electracruiser that Carl Vogel will
build for you. This link is easier and more
informative than the stylized homepage.
Or, have a street legal sportbike built for you at
http://www.electricmotorsports.com
If you can find a used Lectra EMB, that is an option.
If you choose to build one yourself, I recommend you
begin by looking at the builds on the EVDL album
http://www.austinev.org/evalbum/index.html or the list
of EM links on http://www.electricmotorcycles.net

Hi folks,
As most of you are no doubt aware, I operate a website called the EV
Photo Album, accessible at http://evalbum.com or
http://www.austinev.org/evalbum The EV Album site is hosted by a
member of the Austin EV club, Aaron Choate, as a service to the EV
community. Thanks again Aaron!
I can't remember exact when I originally created the Album, probably
in late 1998 or early 1999. At any rate, from its tiny beginnings
back on GeoCities it has expanded into a monster of 850 plus pages of
HTML and over 6800 images with 705 individual EVs included. Of
course at this size it is well past the point where I should have
moved on to more advanced methods than simple HTML. Fortunately,
Jerry Halstead and Seth Rothenberg have stepped up to help me move
the Album up out of the dark ages. Seth has pulled the existing data
from the web and Jerry is building the database and writing the code
to make it all work. I am almost done scrubbing the data from Seth
to make it all consistent.
Now, my question is what, as users, would you like to see the EV
Album do that it doesn't do now? Faster additions? That is in the
works. More advanced searches, that too, but if you can tell me
exactly what you want it to do we can make sure it does that, if
possible. So, what do you want?
For those of you who have an Album page already and want to make an
update, if you could hold off for a bit while we get this conversion
worked out, then we will only have to fix it once and you will only
have to review it once. I am still adding pages at this point,
hopefully that won't be affected.
Thanks,

Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for a solution for air conditioning on our 72V NEVs. Randy said
there had been a thread on using 72V pack UPS inverters to power 120VAC air
conditioners. Anyone know where to buy these?
Thanks,

I love the evalbum, it sounds like it is going to get even better.
I'd like something that would list data in columns, so multiple
conversions can be compared. Each line could be a conversion, and
each column things like motor, controller, voltage, etc.
I'd vote for columns for 0-60 mph time, 1/4 mile time, 1/4 mile
speed, and top speed (already there). Another handy column would be
"Stripped donor weight." It is fairly easy to get a gasoline car's
weight, but harder to find out what the glider weighs once it is
stripped for conversion.

It looks like a 19 inch rack but is slightly wider.
It was used to house a PECO-II telecom supply, I still
have one unit with 48V 50A supplies and a unit with
the load distrubution via bus bars, two dozen 100A
clip-on breakers, series shunt to measure the current
and so on.
a second identical rack was used to stack batteries,
I think 6 or 7 heavy-duty steel shelves bolted to the
rack, each holding 48V worth of batteries.
If you want to store your off-board dump charger batteries
on a limited floor space, this may be for you.
Since the 23" width is measured including the rack mounting,
the space on the shelves themselves are about 21" wide.
I can send you photos to show how it looks.
Probably you can find more info if you search for the PECO-2
power supply (rectifier) racks.
This document describes a newer version of the rack, but the
shelves and rack size are the same:
http://www.peco2.com/Cutsheets/ShelfPowerSystems/129.pdf
I can deliver in the San Jose area, shipping is not
recommended as these racks are Heavy!
BTW - the racks either bolt to the floor or a dolly if you
want the whole thing to be movable.
Note: it does not go through a normal door while standing
up, it is as high as the horizontal beam above the door,
so it needs to be tilted (or modified) to clear a door.
Everything except the electrical stuff is available for
scrap metal prices or a donation for my truck to recharge.

The Honda transaxle run backwards would give you limited gears and may cause
premature failure. I would think with a front wheel drive transaxle setup
you could shoe horn one in the back of a car using it's normal orientation
since the motor will be sideways unlike a rear wheel drive transmission and
if your going through all the work to do it. You could make one of the
electric motors run counter clock wise with some modifications if you
already have the Honda transaxle, Jim Husted may be able to give you some
pointers on doing that. 4x4 competition buggies have been using a Honda
ice/tranny with custom drive shafts for all time 4wd and do quite well with
the reduction in weight.

Subject: 4wd question when using two motors?
I was wondering about the Honda driveline. The engines
run the other direction...
If I had two front wheeled cars like a Geo Metro and a
Honda Civic, and I used the Geo Metro intact except I
swaped the back-end with the front end and axles with
the Honda Axle.
when using two surplus motors, would it be ok if they
both ran clockwise?
I was trying to avoid have to flip tthe rear end 180
degrees.
I hope I'm clear enough

If you are doing a database, then you may want to do
cookies and have each person setup a profile as to what
is imporant for his browser to see in the display.
I enjoy looking at the classifieds and seeing the range
and the top speeds of each car...I don't care that much
about the 1/4 mile run times...but I know that is very
important to many others in this list.
Also, it may be a cool idea to have an email section so
you can sign up to see when items are added to the

The EV list has a policy prohibiting binary attachments, especially large
ones. This is because we have subscribers in several other countries, and
in some cases they pay by the minute for connect time and/or by the kilobyte
for data transfer. When you send large attachments to the list, you are
literally taking money out of their pockets.
Please post data files on the web and provide a pointer to the file for
those who wish to download it.
Normally attachments are removed by the listserver, but the list's
attachment filter has been down for some time. I'll follow up on this again
with the SJSU folks.

Yes, there is a spot for this already, but it seems like nobody makes
much use of it. It is the Tech section of the EV Album at:

That is another spot we may look at eventually for upgrading as
well. If you want to do the same thing on grassrootsev that would

Greetings,
How about a spot where you can list how many electrical miles you have
put on your conversion. Something that shows how many years you have had
it electric and how many miles since then. It could be updated every
three months or so.

- Redirects
If the new pages won't have the same url as the old it would be very
important to add redirects from the old urls to the new ones as there
are probably hundreds or thousands of links out there that would
otherwise become broken.
- Specifications
It would be nice if there could be new specs such as miles/Wh and
range characteristics, further it would be swell if they could all be
graphed. I'm thinking something like the stats you find at gov
sites that rate mileage. Maybe we could even add CO2/mile ratings
for the us mix average and for the vehicles regional grid characteristics.

- User manageable
It might be helpful if users could login and update their vehicles on
their own. I've grown quite fond of the mediawiki site software,
which can be locked down pretty tight to prevent abuse, but it
sounds like you're implementing your own solution... One handy
thing about a wiki is that people can see what's been changed

Mike, I can't resist. What about integrating it with Google maps by the
city/state/country name. I do this quite a bit with info that can be
geographically displayed. Imagine looking at an EV listing in Austin, then
click "map". All that needs to be done is redirect to the URL:
http://maps.google.com/?hl-en&q=austin+texas
It would require that the database keeps city, state (or province) and
country in separate fields for accuracy.
Another thing, which I have not yet figured out, is to be able to display
the entire database on a map. Ken Trough had been working on this with
another web map tool - but it requires people to re-enter their info. It
would be nice to have your database tied to a map.
It answers questions like: "Where are the other EVs close to me?" "where
are the concentration of EVs?" (although most believe the epi-centre is in
Portland), or even better, when someone says "I get 100Wh/mi" we can always
take a look on the google map, click satellite photo and see what kind of
terrain they drive in ("no wonder! you live in Kansas!")

Subject: EV Photo Album Upgrade
Hi folks,
As most of you are no doubt aware, I operate a website called the EV Photo
Album, accessible at http://evalbum.com or http://www.austinev.org/evalbum
The EV Album site is hosted by a member of the Austin EV club, Aaron Choate,
as a service to the EV community. Thanks again Aaron!
I can't remember exact when I originally created the Album, probably in late
1998 or early 1999. At any rate, from its tiny beginnings back on GeoCities
it has expanded into a monster of 850 plus pages of HTML and over 6800
images with 705 individual EVs included. Of course at this size it is well
past the point where I should have moved on to more advanced methods than
simple HTML. Fortunately, Jerry Halstead and Seth Rothenberg have stepped
up to help me move the Album up out of the dark ages. Seth has pulled the
existing data from the web and Jerry is building the database and writing
the code to make it all work. I am almost done scrubbing the data from Seth
to make it all consistent.
Now, my question is what, as users, would you like to see the EV Album do
that it doesn't do now? Faster additions? That is in the works. More
advanced searches, that too, but if you can tell me exactly what you want it
to do we can make sure it does that, if possible. So, what do you want?
For those of you who have an Album page already and want to make an update,
if you could hold off for a bit while we get this conversion worked out,
then we will only have to fix it once and you will only have to review it
once. I am still adding pages at this point, hopefully that won't be
affected.

cycle? avail voltage? Current?
Comments?
G'day Paul, and All
If it is DC and cheap enough that you are considering this, then it is an
inverter welder for "constant current" type welding, stick or TIG. The
lower cost versions of these are actually more constant power relying on
the arc impedance to make it more like constant current.
I investigated a charging scenario where remote-pot versions of these type
of welders were used to charge 48-V blocks of a pack, using an industrial
controller to measure the voltage across the 12V modules and do charger
cutback and bypass regulation control. The reason for this was for
"off-the-shelf" parts in a remote-ish area. It was do-able, but the cost
effectiveness was marginal.
The output of these welders is around 80V open circuit, and depending on
the current dialled up and the loading the voltage falls to whatever is
happening - down to 0V when the welder stick is.. um.. stuck.
Hope this helps

- Redirects
If the new pages won't have the same url as the old it would be very
important to add redirects from the old urls to the new ones as there
are probably hundreds or thousands of links out there that would
otherwise become broken.
That was one of the reasons I didn't do anything about this for so
long. Jerry has that one solved. The new pages will respond to the
old URLs. I didn't even know that was possible.
- Specifications
It would be nice if there could be new specs such as miles/Wh and
range characteristics, further it would be swell if they could all be
graphed. I'm thinking something like the stats you find at gov
sites that rate mileage. Maybe we could even add CO2/mile ratings
for the us mix average and for the vehicles regional grid characteristics.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/1605/coefficients.html
Keep in mind we are pretty much stuck with the data fields we
have. Most folks don't fill in all the ones we have now, more blank
fields doesn't mean more data. I doubt more than 10 of the folks
with Album entries could tell you what their Watt hours/mile
is. Like range that also would be mighty dependent on terrain and
driving style. It might be possible to come up with a calculated
Watt hours/mile based on battery capacity and range, but would it be
of any value?
- User manageable
It might be helpful if users could login and update their vehicles on
their own. I've grown quite fond of the mediawiki site software,
which can be locked down pretty tight to prevent abuse, but it
sounds like you're implementing your own solution... One handy
thing about a wiki is that people can see what's been changed
rescently: http://www.eaa-phev.org/wiki/Special:Recentchanges
This we have been discussing.

Already parsed out and scrubbed just for that purpose. I am not sure
if we will go Google or what, but yes, I would like to be able to
show the nearest EV or EVs to any point and so forth.
My day job is GIS, so I would certainly like to do something like a
map of EVs. We should probably add EV clubs as points of reference
on the map as well. Click on the point, go to the page.

How about the ability to login as a user and update pics without having YOU
do the updating? Just trying to lighten your load. Thanks for a great
service to the EV community and cause!

Greetings,
How about a spot where you can list how many electrical miles you have put
on your conversion. Something that shows how many years you have had it
electric and how many miles since then. It could be updated every three
months or so.

Hmm, not sure on this. I will pass it along to the more PHP savvy folks.
Also, it may be a cool idea to have an email section so
you can sign up to see when items are added to the
classifieds or "wanted" sections...
This update is only on the Album not the EV Tradin' Post. That is
already running on a database, but the scripts are all downloads from
the net and the coding is in Bulgarian. Since I don't know PHP or
Bulgarian I am not sure how much can be done. Other folks have asked
for this as well.

I'm actually trying to do something similar to this for an EV-related
project I'm starting to work on. While you can do it just fine by using
Google Maps URLs, unfortunately if you want to seamlessly integrate the
mapping functionality through their API into an application of your own,
you have to use latitude and longitude instead of addresses.
Apparently Google and Mapquest realized that geocoding (converting address
information into coordinates) is hard, and therefore valuable. So Google
doesn't do it for free through their API and Mapquest doesn't give you the
numbers anymore.
Interesting however, is my recent discovery that Yahoo has a [apparently
new] geocoding API connected with their maps service. I haven't looked
into it much yet, but it looks like there are no strings attached, except
for noncommercial usage and a 50,000-query limit per IP, per day. The
alternative is geocoder.us, which is based on fairly shaky data from the
US census but is also free for noncommercial use.
