No doubt this is true.  However, the problem isn't the AC motor.  The reason 
you can't fix them is that they have proprietary, closed drive systems. 

If you have good EE chops and a lot of time on your hands, you may be able 
to reverse engineer the drive (as some of the folks with Dolphin drives in 
US Electricar EVs have done).  However, in most cases unless you have the 
factory manual, spare parts, and tools, about the only thing you can do with 
these EVs is gut them and replace the factory drive with a generic, open 
and/or documented one - your choice, AC or DC.  

Being an AC drive has nothing to do with it.  They could just as well have 
made a DC drive difficult for non-factory EV mechanics to work on.
