Yes, I like that idea.  Perhaps you could have 2 different coloured needles on 
the same gauge - one for 'ideal' and the other for 'like now'.

Let's not forget though, that most EVers are going to use the EV for doing the 
same trip every day and once they find out they can drive it without any range 
concerns, the whole range anxiety thing goes out the window.

For the long distance trip though, ultimately, once a thorough charging 
infrastructure is in place, your in-car display will show your route overlaid 
with options as to when/where to charge, reminding you, no doubt, when things 
start to get a bit marginal.  Again, range anxiety is not an issue.
