I personally think the whole "estimated range" is a recipe for
disaster... George Carlin said:

I agree. You can't boil down range into a single number.
You can tell them how many KWH are in the batteries (roughly like
telling them how many gallons are in the gas tank). Even here, there is
"rubber" in this number. Label it in gooney unites like "Energy",
because the actual KWH you can get will change with rate of usage,
temperature, etc. It's the same as for gas gauges; they won't tell you
the "gallons"; just "empty - 1/2 - full".
Another possibility is to show range remaining in graphical form. It
could show a range of possible distances you can drive, depending on how
hard you "push" it.
