The Chevrolet Spark EV ... has been hyped for around 12 months: but now a
production version has finally been unveiled to the media ahead of its
official release.

Featuring a 105kW electric motor, the electric car is capable of 542Nm of
torque with an 82mile range. It can race from 0-60mph in 7.6seconds; and
offers an efficient 119mpge.

There are many interesting aspects to the vehicle, which has a firm emphasis
on offering a smooth and quiet drive. This has partly been achieved because
the electric motor features two primary parts: a rotor and a stator. The
stator comes with a steel core to support the motor winding and intensify
the magnetic fields; while the rotor is built around a central hub that
links the transfer torque to the shaft.

There are many firsts in the vehicle too: it will be the first on the market
to feature an approved SAE combo charger from DC Fast Charging. It has a
liquid cooled battery pack developed with the assistance of A123Systems, and
it is able to handle a number of DC fast charges each day without affecting
the battery life. Its fast charge can also help it reach 80 per cent
capacity in around 20minutes.

Its propulsion system features an electric motor, power electronics and a
gearbox. According to Stephen Poulos, the global chief engineer for eAssist
and battery electric propulsion, there was a lot of emphasis placed on reuse
of components with the gearbox coming straight from the production of a
six-speed automatic transmission.

Drivers can also take advantage of a number of driving modes. These include
Sport mode for improved pedal feel; and L-mode for maximum regeneration. The
latter means that the driver will be able to enjoy regenerative braking
while barely touching the brakes: it also greatly enhances the vehicle while
driving on hills.

The Chevrolet Spark EV will cost as little as $17,495 after Federal and
state rebates.
