This has been discussed here previously, so you might find a look in the EVDL archive enlightening. Briefly, though, there are a LOT of connections in that battery. Each one is a potential problem. Ask yourself why a Boeing 747 doesn't have 8000 8- gallon fuel tanks. Making it reliable would be a real challenge. My hat's off to Tesla for their ability to make that battery work - but with no offense meant, IMO it's a hack to allow the use of commodity cells. It's a bloody good one, mind you, but still a hack. I fully expect that as the EV battery business matures, they'll revisit the design. I could be wrong, of course.
