1221x controller, the huge heavy unsecured 00 cables vibrated while
driving, which eventually caused cracking of the potting material...

The Curtis controller *looks* sealed; but it is not! The hard potting material they use has a different temperature expansion rate than the aluminum case, so it *always* cracks and lets water in. The water then proceeds to slowly damage things inside, until the controller fails.

As Bruce said, the failures are often catastrophic. Parts fail sorted, or explode. Trace melt off the PC boards, and parts of the board can even catch fire and burn. A controller failure that has progressed this far is often not worth fixing.

When I fix these controllers, I have used silicone rubber to re-seal the ends. It is soft and flexible, and adheres well to the aluminum case. If the case ever needs to be opened again, it is also easy to cut.
