David, You can't make an OT comment without sparking an OT discussion ;-) On that note...
As someone who has benefited greatly from this list and who has been driving an EV conversion daily for almost five years AND who is a Model-S owner, I would like to make some counter points. 1. Because of the battery capacity on a Model-S, unless this guy has over a 200 mile round trip he would have no need to top off. 2. The Model-S puts all EV's (DIY or factory) in a good light. When I have my Model-S and conversion out at the same time I frequently get more interest in the conversion than the Model-S. 3. Although EV conversions can be done cheaply, when you start using nicer components (Zilla's, BMS, Lithium, Brusa, etc) the cost adds up. I'm sure there are a more than a few EV "hobbyists" who could afford a Model-S. 4. Model-S owners do get unplugged (if using a J-1772 charger). 5. Model-S owners do get ICE'd 6. I know there have been more than a few EV hobbyists banned from this list for being a*****s 7. No self respecting Model-S owner would be seen in West LA ;-) (OK. This one I'm making up.) I guess my point is can't we all just get along :-) <end of soapbox> <end of tongue in cheek> Barry P.S. Usually David does this but in this case, from the EVDL rules: "Be collegial and civil." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of EVDL Administrator Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2013 3:29 PM To: Electric Vehicle Discussion List Subject: Re: [EVDL] Involuntary disconnect On 19 Nov 2013 at 10:38, Peter Gabrielsson wrote: > Locking the coupler ... prevents plug sharing but in some locations it > might be necessary. If they're rude enough to unplug you, they might be nasty enough to damage the lock, or even your car, trying to free the coupler. The problem here is that you can't know how badly the other guy needs a charge. On the other hand, you probably can't count on him to be truthful about that. There are always people who consider their needs more important than yours, no matter what they are. Was the other guy driving a Tesla, by any chance? Just wondering. I don't want to spark an OT discussion, but let's just say that some folks out there in the Real World are not that well socialized. Often their parents didn't do their jobs in that respect. Also, for some of them, the more wealth they acquire, the worse this gets. (Not to say that all wealthy folks - or Tesla drivers - are this way, just that having "beaucoup d'argent" seems to amplify pre-existing a**holiness.) I fear that as the number of EVs on the road grows, this problem is apt to get worse. That was one of the nice things about EVs being strictly hobbyist-built a few years ago - the community was closer, I think.
