Hello,

In the 70's, I worked for Globe Union, which was the largest
manufacturer of after market batteries. (The battery division for Globe
Union, is now owned by Johnson Controls.) Back then, we sold the same
batteries to many brands, such as those sold by auto parts stores, and
Sears branded as Diehard. However, there actually was a difference.
Some customers, more specifically Sears, had different standards than
others, so while the Diehards came off of the same assembly line, they
had small changes in them to meet those perceived higher standards.
Whether those standards made a better battery is up to debate though.
Does increasing the freshly manufactured battery's capacity at the
expense of life makes it better?

Mike

In the eighties, not counting Yuasa who only made motorcycle batteries
then, for a time there was only one PbSO4 battery manufacturer - Exide.
All of them Interstate, Diehard, Exide, every single one, was made to
spec by Exide. If Dies hared and Interstates were really better it was
only because they spec'd them to be better. Nothing much has changed
there are just a few more manufacturers. So the quality and warranty
issues are all on the people specifying there design, selling them.
