The noise produced by a converted petrol motorcycle is barely above a low whirr, not the sound you would expect from a sleek machine capable of 110kmh and hopefully more. The prototype is the brainchild of engineering brothers Matt and Ty Bishop, who have converted a 1998 150cc two-stroke Suzuki motorcycle into a machine powered entirely by electric power. They swapped out the petrol motor and gearbox, added 15 lithium batteries, a controller and an electric motor. ''We got it up to 110kmh out the back of Christchurch airport,'' Matt Bishop said. ''We can probably, easily, get another 20kmh out of it.'' The brothers plan to race the electric bike during a November 30 electric vehicles racing event at Mike Pero Motorsport Park (Ruapuna). Matt bought most of the electrical components a few years ago when he lived in China, where electric vehicles are more common, and had them rigged and running on his floor. They started converting the RG150 frame in Christchurch about six months ago using mostly off-the-shelf parts. ''The electric technology isn't that hard to put together. It's more like a Lego set-up than a petrol motor,'' Matt said. They had put about $5000 into the project so far and figured they could get a production model going for about $15,000. A much faster petrol bike might cost $5000, so ''there's very little market demand at the moment'', Matt said. Battery life depended on speed. Pottering around town, the street-legal bike could last two or three days without a recharge. Flat out, it would last about 1.5 hours, Ty Bishop said. It plugged into mains electricity. Improved batteries would drive down cost to the point where Honda and other bike companies would start manufacturing electric motorbikes. ''They know how to do it, it's just not worthwhile yet,'' Matt said. The November event, called Evolocity, would feature various electric racing classes, including go-karts, motorbikes, drag races, an efficiency rally, a high school competition and a dragon's den for innovators. The point was putting Christchurch at the forefront of electric vehicle innovation and use in New Zealand, executive director Rob McEwen said. Kiwis probably weren't going to become world leaders in battery or chassis technology, McEwen said, but there were opportunities in niches such as grape harvesting or pig hunting. ''We're good at rural industrial innovation and design. Kiwi blokes are very good at design for rural challenges,'' McEwen said. The brothers weren't rural but they were innovating. ''We just like to go fast,'' Matt Bishop said. [© 2014 Fairfax New Zealand] ... http://www.apev.org.nz/EVolocity EVolocity EVent ...
