I second that, especially with a lot of grit from offroad driving getting into your motor, there is a good chance that brushes have worn faster than usual and are now at the end of spring travel. Brushes without enough force to push them onto the comm become spark generators. They are also easy to check without removing the motor, so first make sure the brushes are in good shape before thinking about other work on the motor.
