That has been the ideal option for quite some time, but the utilities are 
starting to push hard to get dirty liberal bleeding-heart hippie solar people 
off their nice clean coal grid -- to the point of ensuring that solar customers 
pay as much as, if not more than, they would without panels on their rooftops.

Anybody doing solar today should have an exit strategy for dropping off the 
grid. Go with a grid-tie system if at all practical, but make sure you have a 
way of affordably upgrading to an off-grid system without having to discard 
your inverter or the like.
