Better yet for now (IMO), if you're a two- or more-vehicle family, own one ICEV for long distance travel and let the other or rest be EV(s). That way you avoid the mechanical complexity and expense of a true hybrid, and let each tool (vehicle) do its appropriate job. That said -- IF entrepreneurs can see enough profit in fast charging (because that's what it's going to take), and all the other variables line up (which is asking a lot), we may reach a point where charging can be done fast enough, and EV range is long enough, that many people can dispense entirely with ICEVs. Is that likely to happen? I can't call the odds, but for sure it won't happen if we say "Oh, it's hopeless, just let ICEVs cover the open road."
