I drive down to Southern California for EVRUS as a consultant & expert Leaf
Driver. I have done this about 10 times in the last year and a half. I
probably made less than minimum wage. Some of the trips were to scope out
locations and some were to test new equipment. It's hard to break in a new
station with out an EV to test. So my job lately has been to drive down both
the 99 and the 5 to make sure the app and RFID cards work. They do. I've been
to LA 5 times in the last year. Twice on my own and 3 times for EVRUS. This
is why I am knowledgeable about the machines and locations. That is it. That
being said we are the only game in town down the 5 From NorCal to LA. Not so
much on the 99 as that is over filled. I'm only involved because of my EV
knowledge and former work I did on the EVRUS owners converted electric cars.
Since I had a Leaf and had used the previous fast charging system I was a
logical choice to be the driver on the route. I drive the owners Leaf when
working. I sure wouldn't want to heat up my pack unnecessarily. There is a
penalty for fast charging 5 times going down the 99 in 100 degree heat. This
can be avoided by going down the 5. You can make it with 4 stops rather than
5. In the 100 degree heat of the valley the Leaf got to 10 bars heat after 5
fast charges. At this point Nissan doesn't ask you to stop the car...only slow
down. I was not driving fast but after Santa Nella, Merced, Fresno, Tulare &
Bakersfield going to Lebec I was worried. I slowed to 45mph even though I
could have gone faster. I did have to climb the Grapevine with 10 bars. I
drove as slow as 22 mph following a slow truck...happily. The next day after
the installation of the new charging station and charging in Lebec I drove to
Lost Hills and had 38% of the pack left. So I guess I am "advertising" the
fact that there are new chargers out there. I am also advertising my
performance. Yes my boss will make some money but it is a service not yet
offered. We are the first. So how are you going to find out? How are you to
know if it works? I'm like the fly on the wall landing on the soup once in a
while. It's not much of job and I only do it when my schedule allows. I'm
more of a spy than anything else. BTW our chargers are only slightly better
than some of the technology Rich Rudman has. He can charge on level two close
to 20kw. So with the right algorithm theoretically level 2 might be close to
as fast but you'd have to draw the maximum amps and not all level 2 are created
equal....I haven't talked about our app and RFID cards...They cost money. I
hope that explains my position. Sincerely, Lawrence Rhodes
