Hi Bruce etc,
So with an EV only Smart (my original EV choice) will they *drop* the
requirement to pay an additional $5K for the "not included" battery
or pay
monthly surprise battery rental fees? Also the crappy 50K 4 year
battery
warranty needs to match other EVs at 100K 8 years. The other reason
I
ultimately decided to buy a Leaf & Spark instead is that I *couldn't*
get a
shop/service manual (got on Leaf & Spark) or monitor the individual
cell
voltages (like the Leaf with LeafSpy). Will you be able to get a
*service*
manual now and be able to see cell voltages & fault codes like other
EV's?
They don't talk about any of this in reviews such as Car & Driver,
Consumer
Reports etc that have evaluated the Smart EV. I'm glad to see
they're
focusing on EV's but if they maintain their anti-EV marketing they
won't
sell many. The local Mercedes dealer said they won't have *anything*
to do
with them. They need to sell through someone else, Mercedes just
wants to
support high end foo-foo pricey cars.

[Qualifier: I am only a little caffeinated. Today was my follow up
visit at
that Dr that did some chisel, hammer& saw work on me last Monday
(they said
I am healing OK, but it will be a couple weeks before it stops
hurting, and
no, I got off the pain killers on the 2nd day).
So, afterward I went over to E Motor Werks on the SF Peninsula to ask
about
that 40 Pro EVSE the Dr. had (I will use a separate post for more
details on
that). But I left with a better view of what I could do to help the
Dr get
his EVSE up again (EVangel work is always a mild stimuli).
After a couple of slips of strong Vietnamese iced coffee (all I can
allow
myself), I also noticed I was still riding the quick, fast paced tech
talk
buzz I had with the techies at EMW. That (snap, snap, snap the
fingers)
quick paced, fast thinking dialog, had also left my brain in high
gear.
So, with that in mind, please take the following with that, in
perspective.]
There is definitely a difference in the life-pace between Seattle, WA
and
other places that are running at such a high speed it is a wonder
they do
not burn up, all the while they are in denial that their quick
multitasking
life is not as good for a healthy family life or marriage as say, in
Seattle
...
I love all the efforts Steve and his local EV community has made, but
whoa,
25 minutes of slow, slow, slow, dry documentary ... ouch (like
painful
dude).
I tried speeding the video playback up (adjusting the youtube speed
to max)
with the cc on so I could read what was said, but it was still hard
to not
fall asleep ... just to see at the end of the very long clip the
e-racer
waiting for its green light with an empty set of bleachers in the
background
(no one was there to see them race ... zzz).
I found a 1:30min trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUleWXHaM3g
that I thought would cut-to-the-chase and show the best bits, but it
too
was only a shorter version of a long slow documentary. From 0:57sec
to
1:07min was the only exciting part, and after having read:
http://www.seattletimes.com/nwshowcase/automotive/high-school-students-get-a-charge-out-of-building-electric-racer/
http://www.bothell-reporter.com/life/northshore-automotive-students-set-electric-drag-racing-world-record/
of how great dual motors, 800V, 1000hp ... just to see the e-dragster
bounce up and down off the line like its suspension was too weak
(thankfully, I played it too at max speed so it looked like it was
going
down the track as fast as a typical NEDRA e-dragster).
Suggestion Steve, next time some one wants to do another video of the
Shock
and Awe electric dragster, (IMO) get a better video crew to do the
job up
right, and show off all the hard work that was put into it, in a way
(or
pace) that does not lose its audience.

]
I have already contacted the three Electricians EMW had given me.
They
expressed the Dr's Redwood City site was a long distance for them
(out of
their normal territory).
I remembered that the Silicon Valley EAA Chapter member Electrician
that
helps set up the Chapter's NDEW connections at De Anza College, is
based out
of Aptos (Santa Cruz) area, so that also is out of his normal turf
(so I did
not bother him).
I joined the Silicon Valley EAA's yahoo discussion group, but there
is no
telling how long the group's owner will take to enable my membership
(allowing me to post). So, I sent the owner my post requesting
members send
me what qualified Electricians they know.
Since I have no idea how long that will take, I am placing this post
on the
evdl requesting assistance of SF area locals that know of an EVSE
qualified
Electrician they feel good about recommending that is interested in
doing
work on the SF Peninsula (i.e.: a Redwood City job).
The former Electrician that had originally installed the Dr's EMW 40
pro
EVSE incorrectly set the Dr up to use the breaker in the small
breaker box
at the bottom of the parking sign pole, to turn the EVSE power on and
off.
Weathering, and repeated powering on and off the breaker, made the
breaker
wear-out and stop providing power to the EVSE (its dead-Jim). So
there is a
good chance the EMW EVSE is OK, it just has no AC power, but some
Electrician corrections are needed to this setup (from
cheap-n-cheesy, to
up-to-code)
When on site, the Electrician will decide what is best, but their
Electrician task may require:
-applying AC power to the existing parking-lot pole-mounted EMW 40
pro j1772
EVSE to ensure it is working (if not, taking the EVSE to nearby San
Carlos
EMW for a repair estimate, and also getting a price quote of a CS-40
ClipperCreek outdoor EVSE to just replace the defective EMW 40 pro
that is
out of warranty (the Dr. deciding which, as it is the Dr. will have
to cover
either, a repair, or replacement cost)
-the Electrician will need to rewire, revamp the setup (hopefully
moving
some electrical equipment items indoors near the building's power
panel if
possible leaving only the EVSE outdoors), adding a safety switch to
the set
up so the Dr. will use the safety switch to turn AC power to the EVSE
on and
off.
-lastly the ordering and installing of a j1772 holster on the pole to
make
it easy to secure the coupler, keeping it dry, clean, and off the
ground.
The end goal is to have the Dr. plug in the Tesla EV when arriving at
work,
go in the building to flip the safety switch to on, and the Dr's app
will
show the EVSE charging his EV. When he is ready to leave, he turns
the
safety switch to off, shutting off AC power to the EVSE (no outside
EVSE
moochers), unplugs and leaves.
Either shoot me an email with the Electrician's contact detail
directly, or
post it here.
The time on this is needed soon as I would like to hook that Dr. up
with the
Electrician (taking myself out of the loop) to let that Dr. be able
to once
again L2 charge his Tesla-S 85 EV at work.

For a Tesla owner that does not wish to support the general EV
population, Tesla charging equipment is attractively priced.
Probably
as your doctor knows. Tesla equipment will open the charge port
without
doing so through the in-the-car display. That is, it is more
convenient to use. A "wall connector" is $500-$550 and will do up to
80
amps. The installation manual says:
Note: The Wall Connector is approved for
outdoor use, but it is not designed for
complete immersion in liquid. Protection from
rain is recommended but not required.
->I<- think the good doctor should not worry about "moochers", supply
a
J1772 outlet, and do his little bit to help other EVers.
->I<- think breakers will likely serve better than "safety switches".
Breakers are pretty easily replaced and likely to be cheaper than
other
types of switches. It is probably poor practice to use any high
current
switch to frequently start or stop current flow. Relays in EVs and
EVSEs are designed for frequent use.
Disclaimer: I am not an electrician but do a great deal of my farm
electric work.
