Corbin, a braking resistor is typical for industrial variable frequency drives (VFD) and older SCR drives. A VFD connected to a utility service is usually not allowed to regen into the line. As an example. If one installs a VFD on a large rotating mass such as a molder. When the mold breaks center, it forces back EMF into the line. A braking resistor is used to absorb this energy. Used to be very common. Not so much today.
