I can't see the photo (not attached) but the Leaf has two sets of bars on the right hand side of the display.

The outer set indicates the total battery capacity (e.g. out of 12 bars total). The inner bars indicate the current battery charge. So if the car is discharged, the guess-o-meter can say "zero miles remaining" and the inner bars will be down/gone/low, while the outer bars can remain, indicating that if you charge the car, your battery can accept up to 10 bars of charge.

(if I remember correctly, the first bar is 15% and subsequent bars are ~6%, so a 10/12 bar car would have around 79% of it's "factory" battery capacity left.)
