Haven't most of the NiMH patents expired now?
The earliest ones have; but newer ones have not.
The early nimh cells had less capacity, and a relatively high
self-discharge rate. Those are rather serious limitations for EV use;
but don't stop them from being used in many other applications. They are
still manufactured by the millions. They have essentially replaced
nicads in small portable devices, and are still widely used in hybrid
vehicles.
Regardless, NiMH is an outstanding battery technology with many positives.
However, the fashion has already turned to lithium ion, and I expect that it
would be tough to reverse that trend.
There is a niche market for just about *every* battery technology. Heck,
lead-acid batteries are still being used by the billions for ICE engine
starting and industrial fork lifts (where weight is a virtue; not a
detriment).
