Not so!

In 2005, the US Supreme Court ruled (Kelo v. City of New London, 5-4 decision)
that eminent domain applied to a local government's idea of "public INTEREST,"
not simply "public use."

In this particular case, the city wanted to "upscale" a neighbourhood, and
kicked dozens of retired people out of their paid-up houses that they had
planned to live out their lives in, in favour of building condos, by a private
developer. This was also supposed to bring lots of new tax revenue to the city.

So, your local government could take your house away and hand it over to a
developer. It's been done, and it's been tested in the court.
