Ami arrives: This is Citroen's new production city vehicle. It only has two
doors and two seats and can be used in some European countries by
14-year-olds without a licence

The Ami is classed as 'quadricycle' and not a car. That means it has to
adhere to different ruls to the usual passenger vehicle

The design is super small as Citroen has created it for urban areas. And you
won't be able to go much further than the city, as the range is only 14
miles

Ami is being launched in France at the end of March, with sales to follow
soon afterwards in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Germany. There are
currently no plans to sell in the UK

  - The Citroen Ami electric city vehicle was unveiled in France this week
  - It's a 'quadricycle', so can therefore be driven in some EU nations by
14-year-olds
  - It will cost from around £5,000, has a 14-mile range and top speed of
28mph
  - The 5.5 kilowatt lithium ion battery can be charged via domestic plug in
3 hours
  - It will initially only be on sale in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium,
Portugal, Germany

Citroen has today launched a back to basics electric vehicle that could be
the ideal runaround for city slickers.

The cute and quirky two-seater has doors that open in opposite directions.
And because it is classified as a ‘quadricycle’ rather than a car, it can in
theory be driven by 14-year-olds without a driving licence in some European
countries.

The production version of its electric Ami city car has a range of 14 miles,
a top speed of 28mph and, powered by a 5.5 kilowatt lithium ion battery, can
be charged via domestic plug in three hours using a built-in cable stored in
the passenger doorway.

The Ami doesn’t have a boot, but instead uses a small recess by the
passenger’s feet plus some space behind the two passengers.

The driver’s door has hinges at the rear so opens from the front, while the
passenger door has its hinges in the more conventional configuration at the
front.

The interior has hard-wearing and washable materials with a large front
parcel shelf by the windscreen.

There’s no traditional dashboard, so drivers simply stick their smartphones
in a special holder high up on the fascia to act as a sat-nav screen and
infotainment system.

A basic instrument panel mounted on the steering wheel carries the key
driver information.

In a nod to the original basic Citroen 2CV – designed in the 1930s to
transport a farmer his wife and children, and a basket of eggs over rutted
roads and fields but which is still seen on roads today – the Ami dispenses
with a traditional window that slides up and down in favour of one that
tilts upwards and out.

The new electric vehicle is available in in seven different versions, with
optional equipment including a storage tray, smartphone clip, a door storage
net and a hook for a handbag.

It is being offered in four colours – grey, blue, orange and khaki - with
options to personalise the vehicle including graphics and roof trim

The compact and boxy two-seater vehicle measures just 2.41 metres long by
1.39 metres wide and 1.52 metres high.

Not only is it shorter and narrower than a Smart ForTwo, its nimble turning
circle of just 7.2 metres is tighter than that of the latest electric London
taxi from LEVC,

The Ami is on sale in France for €6,000 (£5,050) or on a long-term rental
scheme requiring a deposit of €2,600 (£2,186) followed by 48 monthly
payments of €19.99 (£17).

It is also being offered through Citroen's owners' - Groupe PSA’s -
Free2Move car sharing service at a flexible cost per minute tariff of of
€0.26 (21p).

By 2030 the firm expects around one in three of all miles travelled will be
paid for in this sharing manner.

The new Ami is being launched in France at the end of March, with sales to
follow soon afterwards in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Germany.

Although UK availability is not part of this initial rollout, it is likely
that a few will be personally imported.

Citroen bosses are currently studying the legal framework on the car’s
viability, the cost of converting it to right-hand drive for UK roads, and
UK commitment to electric-charging infrastructure, before making a final
decision.

A Citroen spokesman said: ‘In 2020, with more than 100 years of history and
non-conformist, iconic vehicles in its portfolio, Citroën intends to open up
urban mobility to all with Ami - 100 per cent electric.

‘Ami is a practical response to new mobility expectations for short
journeys: easier access to city centres, micro-mobility for everyone, a real
alternative to scooters, bicycles, mopeds, or even public transport. This
solution comes at a reasonable cost too, with new modes of consumption
geared towards digital, and more.’

The production ready Ami follows a year of development since the Ami One
Concept was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.
