Hummer Electric Truck: Fall 2021

General Motors is preparing for a quiet revolution with the reinvention of
one of its most imposing vehicles — the Hummer. Expected to come to market
in the fall of 2021, the GMC Hummer Electric Vehicle pairs capability with
zero emissions.

Featuring L.A. Lakers basketball star LeBron James, GM introduced millions
of consumers to GMC’s first all-electric truck during the Kansas City Chiefs
v. San Francisco 49ers football game.

LeBron James said, “... Everyone knows about my love for Hummer since high
school and I’m proud to be a part of announcing the new EV model. The truck
may be quiet, but the performance numbers speak for themselves.”

The new TV spot juxtaposes the staggering performance metrics of GMC’s
Hummer EV with the remarkable quietness inherent in the operation of an
electric vehicle. The new EV will feature 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb.-ft.
of torque, and 0-to-60 mph in 3 seconds.

General Motors used its advertising to proclaim the electrification of a
vehicle it introduced the same year it killed its first shot at an electric
car. That first electric car was known as the EV1.

The EV1 came to market as something of a beta test. Offered as a lease-only
product, GM enlisted the assistance of some 1,100 early adopters to
determine how well the car would function if it were offered at full scale
production — and if doing so would be profitable.

GM killed the program in 2003, upon deciding mass-production of the EV1
wasn’t feasible. Additionally, it did not allow lessors to purchase the
cars, but insisted they be returned — and would crush most of them. The vast
majority of the people who had participated in the trial wanted to keep the
cars. The resulting uproar left GM with something of a black eye, which was
exacerbated by the introduction of the H2, its second Hummer-badged vehicle.

Ultimately, the H2 came to be looked upon as the personification of all that
was wrong with the “old” General Motors. The company had become too reliant
on trucks and SUVs at a time when fuel prices were rising sharply and
consumer demand was shifting toward more economical vehicles. Massive losses
resulted which, combined with the economic meltdown of that decade, forced
GM to declare bankruptcy, restructure and accept federal loans to remain
afloat. Ultimately, the Hummer brand was discontinued in 2009 as part of the
company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

The announcement of the rebirth of the Hummer nameplate — this time as an
electric model within the GMC lineup — is particularly poignant. It comes at
a time, when once again, the domestic auto industry is leaning heavily on
trucks, SUVs and crossovers for its profits.

Whether past will be prologue in this instance remains to be seen. The good
news is those trucks; SUVs and crossovers do return much better fuel economy
these days. Cars continue to better them in that regard on average, but the
disparity is narrower than in the past.

Still, history has taught us over and over again that those who ignore it
are doomed to repeat it. With that said, both Ford and General Motors are
hedging their bets. The electric Hummer will share roads with an electric
crossover wearing a Mustang badge. Clearly, marketers are counting on the
past allure of those badges to attract future EV buyers. Will that be enough
though? Only time will tell.
