Yikes!  For that poor car to have developed that much rust in less than 9 
years, it must have had extensive exposure to corrosive road chemicals 

Do the MA road crews spread brine in the winter?  Brine seems to be harder 
on vehicles than rock salt, or so I've been told.

It could also be that Nissan wasn't careful about mixing different types of 
steel.  That was a problem with some early FWD VWs in the rust belt.  I 
owned one such VW, a 1976 Rabbit.  The car's underbody rusted out where the 
right front suspension lower control arm attached.
