From: paul dove <[email protected]> "Lithium is not an issue. One of the most common minerals and a very small amount is in a battery cell. Cobalt and other ingredients are the issue."
And Tesla has indicated at battery day, that they are playing with other chemistries that will limit or remove Cobalt. So I think we will be alright or at least are moving in the right direction. It was interesting to read EVDL ideas about a track for autonomous vehicles. However, I really doubt anything like that will be needed since Full Self Driving Beta is already out from Tesla and will be out to the wider fleet in a few months. By the end of 2021, Tesla may have solved FSD (according to Elon Musk) and regulatory improvement will take as long as it takes to prove that FSD is safer than stupid humans who text, fall asleep, etc. while driving. FSD beta has already proved to be able to drive without headlights in the dark. Now we are still a year or 2 out from needing no human interventions but it will come faster than almost anyone believes. When that happens, I will be buying multiple Teslas to send out as robotaxis to earn their keep. It will also be an easy choice for anyone to go electric.
