So compare them on an equal footing using the EU WLTP numbers. Leaf gets
270km WLTP, presumably with the 40kWh battery, and Zoe 400km (actually
395km, sorry) WLTP with a 52kWh battery. Leaf 148wh/km, Zoe 132wh/km.
That's a 12% difference.

But the weights aren't as far apart as I thought. Zoe 1502kg, Leaf 1580kg,
only a 5% difference. Could it be aero differences? The Leaf is a bigger
car, so maybe it has more frontal area.

Generally true. Europe's not like California.

Europe tends to be more pedestrian friendly. People are more likely to go
grocery shopping on foot with a cart than to use the EV, except when the
market offers free charging. :-)

But also it's not as spread out. France is the biggest EU nation, and from
Paris, you can drive about anywhere in the country in 8h or less, not
counting charging stops.

They have motorways with speed limits up to 130km/h where you won't get that
350km range unless you hang out with the trucks.

However, I'd say the most common EV trip would be (wild guess) more like 20-
40km, on 2-lane roads at 80-90km/h. Lower speeds save energy, but a lot of
those roads are winding and some are hilly. Regen is good. :-)
