In Ohio they charged me $200 for my Chevy Volt which is the EV add on instead
of the $100 extra for hybrids.  I also have vanity plates 'VOLTGE' and The
University of Akron emblem (roo).  So it was $344 to register for one year.

Doesn't that depend on how the road tax is calculated ? I don't know the
formula proposed in this case but it's easy to imagine a formula base on
- miles traveled
- efficiency
- weight

When everything was powered by gas, the gas tax was generally fair. That
isn't true any more. Yet, we still need to pay for roads, somehow.

To me, the big issue is privacy. If a gps device is used to track miles,
it can also track location. However, it seems possible to design a
open-source device that only retains miles and cannot report location.

On the contrary, most people are milling about with gps enabled on their
phones, giving google and their carrier more info than could ever be
gleaned from a vehicle tracker.
