I'm sure you could have convinced him that was the sound of a tree falling when
there's no one to hear it.
One could also say… our bubble universe is a web of entangled information….
Perhaps (with compelling theoretical reasons for being so as well) there is an
infinitely larger multiverse… but even that from the bird’s eye view seems
entangled. Perhaps, one could argue… all is entangled information at some level
– even if that level is inaccessible to us.
The notion of the observer (which in some ways it seems should extend to things
as simple as a photon… even a property of a single photon like spin) – is
central to a lot of the debate.
Thus, even though this particular koan has been ridiculed to death by now… in
the same chest of phrases never to be used except for comic relief, such as say
the word “groovy” – but never the less, it was asking the question does reality
exist without an observer… or does reality itself depend on being observed?
Asking this rather deep question long before modern physics ran into this same
patch of forest.
