Life imprisonment is a deterrent, but it's one that can be partially undone
when the person imprisoned turns out to be innocent despite the evidence,
which may after all have been concocted, or just be misleading, or the
police not doing their job properly. Lots of forensic advances have shown
convincted murderers to be innocent. You haven't answered this, mainly
because you can't. There is no civilised answer except that the death
penalty is wrong.
