That's the traditional idea, as recommended by Machiavelli. He knew a thing or two (although I try not to apply maxims like "it is better to be feared than loved" to my child-rearing...)

Indeed. When I had a new branch head come to work under me, I used to recommend that they read Machevelli's "The Prince" and C. Northcote Parkinson's "Parkinson's Law".
