Because the religious fundamentalists are correct and the liberal theologians are wrong, Darwin and the idea of a benevolent God are totally inconsistent. God could just snapped His fingers and create all the animals on this planet including humans; instead, being the sadistic bastard that He is, He decided to make them using the slowest and cruelest process imaginable.
