Except that in the recent brouhaha, only two innocent lives were lost. Similar recent events in the US seem to see hundreds of lives lost. Yes - criminals and madmen will always get guns, but they're less likely to be the more dangerous automatic variety if most citizens are not armed. I still remember the first time I saw a police officer on this side of the country. Police in the East carry handguns - in the West they don't, or at least didn't when I lived there. It didn't make me feel safer!
