We need faith to believe in anything different from our own consciousness here-and-now.

But our perception (part of our consciousness) provides evidence for 1 universe.

?

No, only for a universe. Not one. On the contrary, the evidence is that each big things we tought could be one, appears to be multiple: one earth => many planets, one solar system => many stars, one galaxy ==> many galaxies, one cluster of galaxies, many cluster of galaxies, ... "One universe" is already a strong metaphysical assumption.

It is disingenuous to pretend it's just an arbitrary choice of "faith".

It would be slightly disingenuous if that was for *a* physical reality, but for one, or any number, you will need an act of faith.

With the Löbian machine, you are right, strictly speaking: their belief in *a* model, would be equivalent to a belief in their consistency (by Gödel completeness), which they cannot justify from their beliefs (amazingly enough, by incompleteness), so yes, the belief in a reality is already close to an act of faith. In our brain, the machinery of that act of faith is probably hardwired, so a part of our consciousness relies on some amount of hardwired theology (making the subject difficult as we have to learn to doubt about hardwired millions of years old prejudices: but that is exactly what science is supposed to do.
