I posted about this a few months ago, and I think I've got something to the stage where others may be interested in taking a look.
I've created a bonobo component which embeds VIM inside a zvt widget, and implements part of the GtkHTML interface. It works with Evolution (if you hack evolution a bit so that knows about gnome-vim).
