The IM functionality was just a side project by Nat and myself, and neither of us has had the time to work on it. If someone wants to hack on it, I'll be happy to help out. The back-end stuff is pretty well flushed out, and the AOL TOC implementation works for IMing (no chat, though). The middle layer (EMessenger, IIRC), which associates IM contacts with ECards and dispatches them to the front-ends has been started, but it's not finished and has a fair amount of work to be done. And the front-end stuff hasn't been started.
