Keeps the logs from being able to overrun the OS - and you never want the OS
drive to run out of space, all sorts of crap happens then.

With RAID1 (when the vendor does it right) there's not a significant
performance impact from making two partitions. Three or more there would be
no matter who made the controller. Also, any striped RAID there's always a
big performance hit for partitions.
