It's been a while since I looked at Pierre Bijaoui's "Scaling MS Exchange
2000," but I think his recommendation on disk queue length is that it should
be less than (number of spindles in RAID set/2) for any sustained period of
time. In the case of a 3 disk RAID5 set, then your goal of < 2 would be
right.

The one perfmon counter you need to watch is disk queue length. I think
you'll find on partitioned RAID5's that the queue length averages quite a
bit higher than on a non-partitioned array. IIRC, the goal is to have queue
length under 2.
