That would be a correct statement. But that only applies to the server
on which Exchange is running. The other infrastructure servers, as well
as the AD Schema need to be updated to Windows 2003 before touching the
Exchange server.
The block diagram plan of attack on this problem is:
1. Update the Root domain to Win 2k3.
2. Update the Child domain DC's to Win 2K3. Run the schema
update tools for just Windows 2003.
3. Update the Child Domain FSMO servers to Win 2K3
4. Run /ForestPrep and /DomainPrep for Exchange 2003
5. Update Exchange servers to Exchange 2003 (all servers are
already at Windows 2000 SP3).
6. Update Exchange servers to Windows 2003.
Now, this is subject to changes at any time and is not yet set in stone,
but it's our starting point.

I have a query with your proposed plan in that I have some Microsoft
documentation that states that you must first upgrade Exchange to 2003
before you upgrade Windows to 2003. I'm concluding from this that
Exchange 2000 doesn't function to well on Windows 2003. You may be able
to upgrade the domain controllers to 2003 prior to doing the Exchange
server. I am also looking at doing this in the very near future, so I'll
be following this post to see if any gotchas have been discovered.

Sander

I'm trying to find out, from users who have real world experience, about
the "in place upgrade" to Exchange 2003 from Exchange 2000.
The server that we are using is up to Win 2k SP3 with roll-ups, a member
server. The Domain is currently at Win2K, but will be upgraded to Win2K3
prior to touching any of the Exchange servers. There are no planned
changes to the Exchange organization or the AD forest, with the possible
exception of removing some lingering NT 4.0 domains. These 4.0 domains
do not contain anything relating to Exchange.
I've read the Microsoft material, but I'm looking for users that have
gone through the process.
What are the gottchas?
What did you do to prep the system/Exchange prior to the start of the
upgrade? (Backups, backups and backups, I know, but did you do
ISINTEG/ESEUTIL before doing the upgrade?)
How do you roll back from a failed upgrade attempt?
Would this be a first choice upgrade path, or would you do a Swing
over/Swing back approach?
Interested minds await your answers.
