When you say "same Admin group" you mean in the separate forest for restoring, right? If so, it could have been a name resolution issue. I know BE can be a bit cranky at times when it comes to name resolution (at least up to version 8.6), but I've used it before for alternate server restores using a server with a different name, so it does work.
