Your only choice is defrag or borrow a copy of enterprise from some naughty
russian web site :-)

You might try running exmerge on the information store and you could set it
to move that one mailbox to a pst file.

Subject: exchange 5.5 standard size limit problem

My exchange 5.5 server has stopped (event ID 1112) because the mailbox store
hit the 16GB limit. A user being stupid copied nearly a GB of data in this
morning before I had any idea what he was up to. Yes, we should have had
limits I guess, but my boss has always refused to allow it. Yes we should
upgrade to Enterprise but we hadn't done it yet and have to upgrade the
domain first anyway. Yes all the users had been warned we were running out
of space and they should be careful. Yes I have been pestering my boss to
upgrade for months now.

I can't get the store to come up long enough to do anything such as clean a
mailbox or delete one or get in with a client to delete a message with a big
attachment. Once in a while it does come up just long enough to go down
again the instant I try to do anything. Usually and for the last three or
four tries it fails to start successfully. However it gives no reason why -
it says it is giving no reason why. It does not produce an error message
(other than the Event ID 1112) in the event logs.

I found article 828070 searching eventid.com but it only applies to Exchange
2000 and 2003 as nearly as I can tell.

Should I try eseutil /d (to a network drive so it will take hours) to see if
I can scrounge enough space to get the store to come up long enough to run
clean mailbox and othewise delete enough stuff to get back up or should I
call PSS first? Do they have some cunning reg hack that would allow Exchange
5.5 to come up long enough for me to delete stuff for example as it appears
they do for Exchange 2000 and 2003?

Restoring from backup is a suggestion I have already received and am
considering. But I may have problems doing that since the backup autoloader
has also decided to behave oddly today. Although according to BuExec it did
successfully run last night's incremental and I have a full from earlier
this week as well as the incrementals. If I can get the drive to work.

I'd suspect a power issue but everything is on UPSes.

Anyway, any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Ronni
