Exchange 5.5
Windows NT 4 sp6

We have a mail relay that sits on our only other server with an external
connection which relays mail to our exchange server.

I have recently changed our exchange server to only accept connections from
our internal/external subnets. This reduced most of our spam which turns
out was coming directly to our exchange server which is why antispam
measures on the relay were not accomplishing much. Since I have done this,
most of our spam is gone, with a little bit slipping through on the relay.

Someone just brought up here that if our relay went down, it used to be that
mail could still come through because it would go directly to our exchange
server, and that with the changes I have made, our mail would stop.

I do not feel opening the exchange server back to accepting outside
connections is the right thing to do. However, my boss does not want to
purchase another machine, and as I said our relay is the only other machine
with an outside connection.

Anyone have any thoughts on the best solution to prevent the loss of email
if our relay server were to crash.

Thanks.
