That's correct. That is the RFC compliant behavior by Exchange for both the scenario I described and instances where an external recipient is specified on a mailbox as an alternate recipient.... oh and where a member of a DL is an external contact.
How "SPF not happy" AOL will be at that depends on the settings used by the admin who created the SPF record for their domain.
