Exchange, like most MTA's will attempt to deliver to an MX record host first, and if none exists, should attempt to deliver to an A record host, i.e. if exchange has to deliver a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and the domain acme.com doesn't have an MX record defined (or exchange fails to look it up for some reason), then exchange will lookup acme.com and attempt delivery to that IP.
