OK, I solved this problem. I had internal dns servers listed for the default SMTP virtual server. I added 2 external DNS servers and moved them up in the list and the problem cleared up. It does seem to me however, that a local DNS server should pass the same information, it makes no sense to me that it should need to be configured this way.
