CommVault is a serious backup product, they have a few tiers - the central
management server, media servers and the actual backup servers. I have been
through a few demos with them but for whatever political reasons the
companies I worked for didn't choose CommVault. Even for a demo they usually
send a guy or two to install the product and show how it works.

They can work with SANs or with backup servers. They sure have pretty good
tape management.

Apologies for being OT here but I'm sure I've seen this product mentioned on
this list, albeit probably in an exchange context.

We're replacing a bunch of servers in the next few months, including our
main fileserver, and may be moving to a SAN solution (Dell AX100).

Our experiences with Arcserve have not been too pleasant, so I'm looking at
alternaitves.

What we want to be able to do is "normal" GFS rotations on an LTO2 library,
if we do go the SAN route we would want SAN aware backup software, if we end
up replacing with another bunch of servers with direct attached storage we
need to be able to back that up via a central backup server which had the
tape library attached.

I keep hearing good things about Commvault Galaxy - anyone here use it, have
any thoughts on ease of use etc?

I'm specifically thinking "tape management" - Arcserve doesn't seem very
intuitive at saying "todays "special" Friday, take this tape out and take it
offsite, insert this tape instead" and things like that.

TIA,
Paul
