Do you have any anti-virus services installed on the server? Or v5.5 box has Norton Anti-Virus for Exchange installed and for a while, Norton as overly aggressive in scanning and then rescanning the same messages. That was causing significat delays on retrieving any message with an attachment. Tweaking the AV service cleared up the delays.
